Hull number decipher?

Does the Hull number tell you year/model/etc like a car?

Mine is
14K39717 and I want to know the year of manufacture as I thought it was a 93 but the surveyor thinks it is a 95.

According to the number you posted, You are a hunter 28, hull number 271, built in Jul 1992 and a 95 model. Are you sure that's a G2 and not a G5?

It that is actually the number, you might want to check with Hunter, either someone has altered it or they made a mistake when they initially stamped it at manufacture.

Are you sure that last "2" is really a two?

Based on that HIN, your boat is a:
Model year 1995 Hunter 28
However, the "G2" seems to indicate a date of mfg. as July 1992?!?

Maybe someone can elaborate further

It may be that, for some boats manufactured after 1984, the "G2" was date of certification by the manufacturer, not the date of manufacture, per se. See:

According to the Hunter website (http://www.huntermarine.com/Models/ModelsIndex.html) the H28 was manufactured from 89 to 94, replaced by the H280 in 95. So if you have a H28, it's not a 95. A 93 would make sense (manufactured in July of 92). Double check you HID on the boat, the last digit should be a 3.

According to the PO the Surveyor misread the last # which should be a 3 not a 5. I am going out to the boat tomorrow and will check for my self.

"Boats manufactured or imported on or after August 1, 1984, also have a duplicate secondary HIN affixed somewhere on an unexposed location inside the boat or beneath a fitting or item of hardware. The purpose is to help authorities identify your boat if a thief or vandals remove or damage the primary HIN on the transom. It is illegal for anyone (manufacturer, dealer, distributor, or owner) to alter or remove a HIN without the express written authorization of the Commandant, U.S. Coast Guard."

According to this info call Hunter, maybe they can tell you where the second hull number is located to verify correct number. I suspect a phone call to Hunter could also help figure out the number based on hull number and model. I suspect Lee is correct that your boat is a 93 since they changed the model identification in 1995.
