Hull Number and Vega number

Hi

I have a Vega series I (probably model 1972) which I bought few years ago. The brass plate with the Vega number is lost so I am not sure what is the official number of my boat. I found the number "1264-9" (hand-written and laminated on the hull) from the starboard locker just behind the copper tank. So can I assume the official number of my Vega is 1264.
Those who have similar Vega is hand-written hull number same with the number on the brass plate.

I have never found a handwritten number. I think the best way to determine your Vega hull number is to look at the Hull Identification Number at the top of the transom, on the hull, (not on the deck,) on the far starboard side.

My series 2 didn't have the numbers embedded in the glass either. I am sure
that any boat built in the late 70s, commercially built anywhere in the
world, had an HIN. My guess is that an early paint job covered it up when
fairing the hull. I can only guess that however.

So when I went to get my registration for WA state I just told them the
4-digit hull number and that is what is on the registration certificate. I
guess i could have given then the documentation number, but they were happy
with any number.

The Vega Number is located on a bronze plate by the engine control panel. If
that has been lost check the number on the original mainsail. Some Vegas
have a number inside the lockers but this is a build number and is rarely
the same as its Vega Number.

The HIN on my '75 is molded in on top the transom on the starboard side
with characters ~5/8 inch high. IIRC the U.S. first required them in '72.
If you find the HIN I can locate the secret decoder ring to interpret it.

I could not find the HIN/MIC code but now I found a new build code on deck side (starboard locker and handwritten "1276-9").
So probably the manufacturer has used some coding for hulls and decks.

This boat is located in Finland and according to some papers the first owner of the boat was in Sweden.
I guess the official HIN/MIC was not used those days.
As Steve suggest I have the old main sail with the number 1185. So I have to rely on it.

I have similar numbers under the deck and they don't relate to my hull number. I don't have any numbers on the transom either. My boat was registered in Canada in 1971 and is hull number 1331.

Looking at the site Vega Database
I see the numbers 1184, then number 1188, so it looks like 1185 is a good possibility. Also, on the contact list on the Yahoo site there is no 1185 listed, and a search of the messages reveals no #1185.

Having 1185 on the main sail pretty well confirms it, too.

I am pretty convinced now to order new main sail with the sail number 1185.
It's interesting to clarify history of the boat. Yesterday I got
a new name; one of the owners who sold the boat 1994. Let's see what is his story.

This won't help you Timo but it may be possible to find the past ownership of some Vegas in back Vega newsletters. Sidney Rosen would include the membership list for VODCA members in his VODCA Newsletter, once a year up to about the year 2000, the year he passed away. The list includes the boat name, sail number, owner and location, and most of the boats are in Canada or the US. The newsletters are available in PDF format at the American Vega Association website.
