Hull liner replacement

The hull liner in my '27 had hardened and cracked. I want to replace it. Has anyone done this who would be willing to share his experience? I have tentatively decided to use a fabric in lieu of the original headliner-type vinyl.

Replaced the hull liner

I've just replaced the original liner in my O'day 25. Once I had the old liner out I replaced it with an indoor/outdoor carpet. I looks like a new boat. I can now put velcro on the back of about anything and it sticks to the hull anywhere I want - BONUS! If you choose to do this on your boat, here's some tips: 1)Use a low-weight, polyolefin carpet. Moisture and mildew resistant, and flexible enough to work around all the bumps and bends in the hull. Home Cheapo carries a couple of colors in-store (usually grey or brown) but a good carpet dealer can get you a lot broader selection at around the same price. 2) Use a latex-based adhesive. The odor is significantly less and is gone in a few hours. 3) Get some heavy paper on a roll and use it to make paper templates of the different sections. Use the templates to cut the carpet outside on a flat surface. Much easier than trying to haul a 12 foot section of carpet onto to boat. Oh, and don't forget to mark the templates as to side and direction - don't laugh, it's easy to get them mixed up. Good Luck.

Wood "ceiling"

I'm combining just such a project with my bulkhead project. Decided to get it all done at the same time.I had planned for months on replacing the falling liner on my O'Day 25 with cedar strips, and this was a good time. I've just finished gutting the interior, and will start (tomorrow) removing the old liner and grinding the foam off the hull. Thanks for the response. Have you had a chance to get the old backing/foam insulation off the hull yet?. If so, what did you find to be the best method? I am considering using a soft fabric rather than the stiffer vinyl.

Hull Liner

I've started getting the old foam lined cloth liner off the hull, but I'm not finished yet. I've only been working on it a couple of hours so far, and I'm about half done. I got a grinding wheel to put on my drill and used it. This is a "Paint and Rust Remover" from "GatorGrit" that I picked up from my local hardware store. It's basically a sponge-looking wheel that's very stiff, that's meant to take off paint and rust. It's been very "kind" the fiberglass, with minimal grinding of the fiberglass.It should be noted, this is not completely removing the foam liner. Keep in mind, I don't plan on repainting this, but will put foam insulation over it, so it's not essential that it be bare fiberglass. When I'm done, I plan on using "goof off" as suggested, to see if that gets the remainder off
