I am the recent owner of a 27' Catalina and not very knowledgeable about it. On the hull between the prop and the keel is a slotted metal piece. Can someone tell me what is its purpose.

Thanks

A picture would help ut if it looks somethig like this
then it's a water intake, probably for engine cooling.

That's it. Thanks Matt. I see some weeds or something in the slots. Should I be concerned about that. Can I take the shield off to clean out whatever is in there?

It it's just a few weeds, I would not worry. There should be a strainer between the thru hull and the fresh water pump on the engine. The strainer typically has basket or some sort of a screen that can be cleaned out.

Yes be concerned. In fact remove the whole thing!

I am posting from my phone so I can't post a link easy but do a search on "Compass Marine how to articles" and you can read all the details why.

I will try and remember to post a link tomorrow.

Here is the link Jesse referred to: http://www.pbase.com/mainecruising/external_strainers

I do have immense respect for mainesail and will always consider his experience and opinion but think the message is that these strainers need to be maintained.

That said, in my experierience they do work. My previous boat had a strainer and I never had anything enter the engine water intake. The current boat does not have one and sucks in enough weeds to block the hose before the internal strainer, at least once or twice a year.

So maintain it and make sure the slots are open and go sailing.
