hull identification numbers

i'm new to the hunters and wonder about the hull id numbers. Besides the length and and the year, there is the letter M and A. Anyone know about them.

The link below is one of the best explanations that I have seen. But I have seen a lot of "HIN's" that could not be explained by this. My own H37C looks like: HUN37074M79H. That's #074 built in August of 1979(79H). Not sure if "M" means modified. There are several other explanations in the "Forum Archives".
