problems registering hunter 30 1980 model, tax collector says it has had an incorrect hull id number since the 90's. id on all paperwork is HUN*****M80, they say supposed to have 6 digits in the middle and the transom stamp is illegible, factory says they cant help, I know the number is also stamped in other areas of the hull. Any ideas where that might be??? Any help or suggestions would be appreciated

My hull ID number has twelve digits; HUN71155M82E. It looks like you are missing the last digit after the year. It’s a letter which I believe corresponds in some arcane way to the month the boat was made in that model year. I too have heard the number is also somewhere inside the hull, but I have been in every accessible and not so accessible part of my boat and never seen it. Maybe it’s hiding in plain sight. I know this topic has been discussed on the forum many times. Try doing a search.

Ditto here - I have a 1977 model Hunter 30 and the only place I can find a hull number is on the transom. My hull number has the same format with the letter after the year of manufacture.

I agree with the above...
I have put my nose on virtually every part of my 1979 H30C and, unless a second number was stamped on the underside of a settee or bunk, there's only the one on the transom.

The regulation for 2 hull numbers went into effect in August of 1984 so I'm afraid that will not help you. Are you saying that you have a title or a registration slip with asterisk where the serial numbers should be? Ask the Manager at the Tax Collectors Office what would be the legal procedure to have the Hull ID recoded and reregistered. You might need the services of an Attorney to Draft a Declaration and Sworn Statements. Just ask to see the manager and ask. Good luck.

Stupid Canadian question: if all you are missing is the month letter, let us say it might have been an E, then why not tell them you have found out that the last letter is E? Then they will find that it does indeed comply with standard HIN format and their tiny bureaucratic minds will be satisfied and they will go away to obstruct somebody else.

Further to this, here is a HIN decoder:
Plug in your number with an added letter E and see what it says.

With the HIN decoder, he can figure out the last digit. Roland’s was F for January and I looked up mine; E for December. That suggests to me it’s likely to be a letter from A to L. Only twelve letters to try IF the OP has the five numbers in the middle. I kind of assumed they have the numbers from the old registration and just put in ***** out of concern for security or privacy.

The HIN decoder really is just checking for format: the mfr's ID or MIC, plus any model designation the mfr may have given, plus the serial numbet, the year and the month. Any month letter will work, since there appears to be no "registry" of individual boats. Also, a person who guesses at a month, even if it is not the actual month built, will not be cheating anyone, nor evading taxation (Horrors!), nor stealing anyone else's HIN (since the MIC, serial number and year already make it unique). This will just satisfy a bureaucratic need to have each little box correctly filled in. And what, I ask you, could a bureaucrat stick in his or her little box otherwise?
