I'm missing a digit on the transom HIN. It looks as if it has blistered off and can't be read. Does anyone know where a secondary # might be hidden on a 19' Weekender. The number reads XDYC03 _5M81L. Any Ideas will be welcome as I'm in a transfer of ownership dilemma...:confused:

I don't know where the secondary location is on the 19, but Rudy Nickerson at D&R Marine might. (508) 644-3001

However, the HIN should be already listed on the previous/present owner's Registration card as well as the Title.

XDY ----> O'Day
C -------> O'Day 19 "Weekender"
03?5 ---> hull number, the "?" would be 0 to 9
M -------> "model year" date format (vs. calendar year)
81 ------> 1981
L --------> July

The missing digit should be on the registration if you have a previous one. If the HIN on the registration has a "Z" in the third position, then it is a State issued HIN that will not have any relation to the original one.

I have not found a second location for the HIN/hull number on my O'Day 19. this second location was not required until August 1984.

How to read your boat's "birth certificate"
by Don Launer

"After August 1, l984, boat manufacturers were required to display two identical Hull Identification Numbers, one on the outside starboard side of the transom, within two inches of the top of the transom, gunwale, or hull-to-deck joint, whichever is lowest. On boats where this is impossible, such as double-enders, the HIN must be on the starboard side of the hull, within one foot of the stern and within two inches from the top of the hull, gunwale, or deck joint.

The second HIN must be inside the hull in an unexposed location or beneath a fitting or item of hardware.

The HIN characters, both inside and outside the hull, must be no smaller than ¼-inch high, but many manufacturers make them much larger. It is illegal for anyone to alter or remove one of these numbers without written permission of the Commandant of the Coast Guard."

You could try placing a piece of white tissue wrap paper over the HIN area and rub across the area with the side of a pencil point to create a shadow of the numbers. I usually just use a plain white piece of notebook paper to make those rubbings, but in the case of a nearly invisible number the thinner paper might be better. If that fails to give readable results maybe use the edge of the pencil lead to rub directly over the indentations for the numbers to see whether a non-shaded area shows up where the indent of the number was. Soft lead pencil I think. Like chicken soup.......it couldn't hurt!

Yes, the sail numbers(sewn onto the sail near the logo) might be part of the HIN numbers, especially the hull number as stated in other posts.
