hull flexing

I'm considering the purchase of a 1985 Hunter 28.5. I just had her hauled and a marine survey conducted. I noticed two flexible spots (not more than a couple of square feet in area) in the hull bottom adjacent to the back of the keel and to either side. Pushing on the hull in these areas caused flexing (about 1/8 inch) and you could feel and hear the outer layer hitting some inner layer (or rib?). The surveyor said this was not delamination, just thin layup and should not be a problem. Any advice/suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I'd be concerned

I think I'd be concerned. A weak spot next to the keel. What happens if you run aground hard?

Another opinion

You might find it interesting to read an article about the Hunter 28 by surveyor David Pascoe at www.yachtsurvey.com. The 28.5 might have different construction from the 28, but still... Be prepared for some pretty negative comments about Hunter boats. But IMHO this guy establishes his credibility by showing professionalism and extensive experience. If only we all had a million dollars so we could buy the kinds of boats he likes!

Have a second opinion

It might happen on small-medium boat , if unproperly supported 'on the hard' to have some flex under those support legs. It should flex back when these legs removed . It is not a healthy thing for the boat, it should be put on cradle or supported on designated areas . But if you actually HEAR some noise while flexing , deffinitely something 'unwelcomed' already might have happened under the skin...

I'd be concerned

The hull on a 28 foot boat shouldn't be readily flexing just from your hand, particularly near the keel. Think of the massive pressure on the hull from a lifting a 3000 lb keel 25-35 degrees. This is either a badly damaged or badly built boat. Who recomended the surveyor? The dealer? and was there a long section of the survey that detailed how the surveyor didn't consider himself in anyway responsible for his survey? Good luck.
