Hi all -- I would like to paint my hull and deck this spring and have been investigating possible materials. I will be limited to rolling and brushing. I am familiar with Interlux Perfection but have come across another paint manufactured and sold by Signature Paints that seems to have several advantages. In particular, the manufacturer says that it can be applied directly over my existing one part non skid paint. I believe that the Signature Paint is a two part urethane. Does anyone have any knowledge about this paint or experience with it? Are there any comments about the the durability of urethane paint compared with polyurethane paint? Thanks very much for your help. Steve

Steve , I am afraid that you are gonna have to

do your on research on this one.. I would stop being a yachtsman and would go to the McCormack paint store and but their Interlock direct to metal urethane enamel. I have used it on a fiberglass dinghy that is kept outside without cover. The paint is for years old now and still in good shape. The local McCormack's store used it on their warehouse floor three years ago and it looks perfect today. It sells for about 40 bucks a gallon.

Hull and Deck Paints

I don't know about the McCormack paints that Ross mentioned, but there are several different formulas and brands of urethanes available, that are not listed as marine paints but are just as good, and very possible the same thing, as the marine brands. Lots of stuff on the market which is labeled marine is exactly the same thing as non marine, just labeled differently. I don't think I would go to the bother of the two parts, as there are a lot of one part paints now available that are very good. Some available at Home Depot and Lowes.

types of polyurethane

Search acrylic vs. polyester polyurethanes. http://www.epoxyproducts.com/lpu.html is just one page of information but complete. Compare to other sources.

Top Secret one part epoxy

TS-100 1-Part Epoxy Paint Revolutionary Marine Topcoating System A blend of four high-tech resins, originally developed to meet demanding military specifications for jet aircraft, TS-100 One-Part Epoxy is remarkable because it is catalyzed by oxygen from the air rather than a hardener. This means an epoxy paint with no measuring or mixing, no short pot life, no dangerous isocyanate, and colors that stay bright without yellowing or chalking. Like regular epoxy, it has the highest ratings for adhesion, hardness and chemical resistance. However, unlike regular epoxies, Top Secret's unique blend of epoxy, silicone alkyd and urethane resins, is formulated to bring out the most desireable qualities of each: epoxy provides superior adhesion, silicone resins are resistant to high temperatures, alkyds add superior flow characteristics, and urethanes create that phenomenal glossy surface which is also hard, durable, and resistant to typical marine maintenance and fuel chemicals. Although hard enough to easily resist physical damage, the resulting coating is also remarkably flexible and UV stable, making it colorfast and resistant to chalking, cracking or peeling. This is one tough coating; it looks great and will outlast anything currently on the market. Since it typically provides full coverage and protection with just a single 1 mil coat, it regularly provides 3 times greater coverage per gallon than other epoxies, making it economical to use. Features: # Extraordinary self-leveling properties # Creates a waterproof film that remains both hard and flexible at the same time # Adheres to almost anything and dries to an exceptionally high gloss finish --- never wax your boat again # Inhibits rust, waterproofs, and is resistant to chemicals, spilled fuel and acids, even brake fluid # Easy to repair # For above waterline use # Can be brushed (bristle brush recommended to avoid bubbles), rolled or sprayed; no sanding between coats; easy clean-up # Available in 5 gallon sizes, please call # Theoretical coverage: 700 - 800 ft²⁄gal @ 1 mil (dry); typically covers in one coat

Thanks

thank you all very much for the references and suggestions so far. Looks like I have some further research to do. Anyone have direct experience using the TS paint? Steve

I tend to get suspicious as a cat about

revolutionary new anything. Especially if they call it "top secret". Give me a paint manufacturer with a long history in industrial coatings. There is no shortage of reputable paint formulators and paint chemistry is no longer a mystery. I did some googling after my first post on this thread. I won't attempt to paraphrase what I learned but entering a search for: water borne urethane paints, VOC compliant industrial coatings, and exterior structural corrosion control coatings is a good way to start.
