Let me add that you want to make sure the yard you have chosen is using "in-house" workers. There are some yards that may turn the work over to a third party from outside the boatyard who is merely a supervisor and hires the cheapest labor available. So ask your yard who exactly will be doing the work.

Are you saying the labor they pick up that morning in the HD parking lot might not be as skilled as the guys from “in-house”. Darn.

Not always True...

I have the best "out side Fiberglass Repairman" that comes to the yard for 100% of their work.
Of course the yard gets their percent of add on cost.
But the yard provides the service and orders the Gel coats, resins, minor tools, etc.

The Yard looked for the Best and found him...

I always thought yards should encourage outside contractors who have insurance and licensing for skilled work. They would, get a mark up, but be free of payroll, a good deal of insurance, and all the other expenses that come from having to keep employees around - including paying them when there isn’t that much work. And they would be free of warranty issues. I see more yards going this way. Just be a real estate company.

if your boat repair contract is with 'the yard,' we hope 'the yard ' will warrant and stand by the quality of the job. if your contract with the yard allows them to hire 'independent contractors' (from HD parking lots) , the yard may not want to warrant the quality of their work. and you may have a difficult time if these independent guys screw up.

The yard is already on the hook for repairs. They can have this contract with the customer or that contract, but the customer can't sign away liability rights. The yard can limit warrantee obligations but if the keel falls off a boat and people get hurt they will be on the hook. They have insurance for that. But if they don't do those kind of repairs they don't need that insurance.

In my case, this is order of Quality checks...
1) Progressive Insurance Company
2) The Admiral of our boat, Sue
3) The Quality by our Surveyor
4) The Captain , me

By the way.. #2 is the toughest !!
