Hello All, This is a continuation of a thread from the "legacy" site and I just wanted to follow up.

Recall that the discussion revolved around my request to try and turn my boat over and work on a crack in the hull. While this discussion took place, we were also discussing how the H23.5 hull was constructed, Solid or cored below the water line. Here's what I have found out from the kind people at Hunter Customer Services. They have really been a great resource:

1. The hull is solid below the water line.
2. The cause of the crack most likely (his best guess since he was only diagnosing by my description of the hull) caused by sometime in the past, the previous owner left the water ballast system full and it froze, cracking and causing water to enter the hull. The hull then froze and delaminated.

The next step is to assess the cost of repair, repair it myself (I do not think that I have the expertise for this large of a repair), or junk the boat and start over if it cost as much or more than a good used boat on the market.

Scott, did you get a chance to talk w/ the guys who did the last repair?

It would be interesting to hear what they say re: their supposed balsa repair. At any rate, good luck!

Balsa Core

I talked to the repair facility's owner. he wants me to bring it in so they can assess the damage. hopefully he understands that they have some culpability in the second crack if they did not fix the original problem. I will let everyone know when I know.

Happy Sailing!

Bummer!!

You will need to keep in mind that this is the same place that 'supposedly' repaired and 'recored' your hull already. With that in mind, everything that this guy says must be suspect.
I would want an independent assessment from a certified surveyor of the damage and the possible cause and repair before moving forward. At the very least you now know that this yard is not to be trusted.
