Years ago in 1986, I took a tour of the Lear Ziegler Marine Division of O'Day in the Fall River Ma. Industrial Park. I had ordered a new O'Day 222 in the Boston Boat show and it was being built while I was on tour in the factory. They showed me my boat while I was there. They were using cloth in the molds as well as woven roving that they sprayed into the mold. I think that they used Balsam and plywood for the areas of the hulls and decks that needed reinforcement. I had a lot of questions about where to place my Jennie winches and tracks on the combing, as they were kind enough to leave them off the cabin of my boat for me to relocate. I talked to the forman, a real nice guy named Chuck Resnevic, who later on sent me some free Gel coat touch up for my boat when I met him again at a boat show in Newport RI. I think that I also met E. Howard Hunt at the factory, too. The boats were built well as far as the hull is concerned, but I did have a problem with voids in the gel coat in the cockpit. There rudder construction technique left a lot to be desired. I broke two rudder blades. They were built in two halves, glued together, and pumped with foam. All O'Day boat rudder were constructed this way, so I had been told by Rudy Nickerson of D&R Marine in Assonet Ma. This is about all I can tell you about these boats, except that Rudy bought all the molds and started building some of these boats in the 1990s. The few that He did build, were better constructed, with better materials than when O'Day built them. However, O'Day built a great boat then, and they're still great today.

I wrote this earlier but it failed to post.....the o'day 302 hull is solid..the deck is cored.....w/various stiffners put in on the deck.........the hull is surprisingly substantial.
