over the years, white substance from the rub rail has flowed down onto the hull, leaving white traces on the blue hull. any thoughts on removing these traces? car wax and fiberglass cleaner remove some of the blue, which i suspect is due to the hull being painted over the years. any thought son vinegar, etc?

If you have ever used "fiberglass cleaner" on an LPU painted topsides, you likely removed the top coating which protects the paint thereby leaving it porous which is the problem. Repeat after me - "never do that again".

I'd rely on the paint experts to recommend a course of action now rather than anyone unfamiliar with painted hulls. You don't want to exacerbate the damage.

thanks! nope, i haven't done anything with the hull, except to experiment with some small patches. i'll check with the local boatyard.

If the substance is plant based... such as "pond scum" (algae)... then diluted acid will take it right off... rinse thoroughly of course.
If you believe it is petroleum or rubber based...such as bumper marks, shoe sole skids, etc. then acetone is good.... Acetone may also remove paint if too much is used or left on too long... so.. put the acetone on the rag, then go to work on the substance... rinse with fresh water as you go along.
You, however, must make some kind of attempt to identify the stuff... so.. posting a picture here will go a long way in finding help.
