Hull 11011 Class 746

Hi,

I'm looking at purchasing an O'Day sailboat but I'm having difficulty identifying it.

The owner thinks it's a 23' but there are some things that don't seem to match the description I can find on an O'Day 23.

First of all, it has a keel and no CB. It also has a rudder that does not stick off the end. The cabin layout doesn't match the drawings I've seen of a 23' either.

Can any one help me ID it from it's Hull Number and Class?

That's a lot older than a 23. I have a '71 23 with a hull number just shy of 25,000. It's probably a Mariner.

I don't think it's an O'Day. The hull numbers and letters on the O'Day are generally embossed in the fiberglass in upper right hand corner of the outer stern. The numbers are usually preceded by the letters XDY which = the mfg., O'Day.

For example: XDY T 1000 M 73 A The letter T=O'Day 23, 1000=Serial #, M 73=Model year, and A=August, the month that the boat was manufactured in 1973

Actually, his class number being much higher than mine with his hull number lower proves his isn't a 23.

It may be a Tempest. They are around 23 ft and would have had the older style serial numbers. I had heard that the Hull# was the total number of all hulls previously built and the Class# was the number built of that model. If that is the case, then yours is the 11011 hull built by O'day and the 746 of that model.

She is a TEMPEST I bet!
That HULL# suggests a mid-1960's model, and hte Class# would seem right for a TEMPEST of that time frame.
Prior to the USCG requirement for the 12-digit HIN (the "XDY" HIN for O'DAYs) that started with the 1973 Model year (specifically 01NOV 1972), O'DAY used a 2-number ID plate on all boats. HULL# refered to how many TOTAL boats O'Day had built and Class# refered to how many of that model. I'm not sure if HULL# 1 was the first boat built BY O'DAY or first O'DAY boat built (prior to about 1961 or so, Marscot Plastics built the boats FOR O'DAY).
Pictures below of a TEMPEST (not to be confused with the International Tempest, also built by O'Day for a while). The 1962 model that I show has been modified by adding an aft bulkhead to the cabin, the Tempest had a canvas enclosure for the aft end of the cabin on 1968 and earlier models, 1969-70 models had a bulkhead molded in as part of the deck mold (similar to the 1969 upgrade of the MARINER). 1969-70 models had 4 berths in the cabin, 1968 and prior had 2 (again, like the MARINER).

She's a tempest alright with beautiful lines.


She has some trouble with the joint between the keel and the hull, but nothing that some 105/206, g-flex, and a lot of sand paper and elbow grease won't fix.

From the description at the beginning of the post I would also have guessed that it was a Tempest. I've always liked the lines of that boat. O'Day also made a 26-foot boat in the 60's called the Outlaw that had similar lines.
