My kicker was stolen and I am looking for an outboard light enough to bring home each trip. obviously tiller/pull start. Tohatsu has a light 6 HP 25" shaft that caught my eye but I don't know if 6 HP will move the boat well enough. I need the extended shaft as the 1982 Hunter '22 has a closed and very high transom. Tohatsu's 25" shafts are limited to the 6HP and the 9.9 but the 9.9 is only remote/electric start.

Anyone?

I had both an 8hp and a 9.9hp on the back of my old Lancer 25. The 8 was about 85 lbs and the 9.9 about 110 lbs. Go with an 8 max in my opinion for your boat, with a long shaft for certain. The six could be marginal for saltwater use if your boat is 3000 lbs or more. I thought for sure that tohatsu had an 8hp extra long shaft engine, but you can't tell from their web site.

A lot of the 9.9 HP two-stroke models were designed for the small sailboat market and often have larger props and different gearing than other outboards did. That isn't the case with the four-stroke ones for the most part, and getting a large enough prop to work with a displacement sailboat can be a problem.

I had an Oday 23 for years on the Chesapeake with a 6 hp Evinrude. I changed the prop to a 3 blade, they called it a work prop. Made a big difference in power available and pushed me whenever I needed it to. My boat weight was 3100 lbs. Ray T

I don't know about outboard engines but I push my 9500 pound 30 foot Islander with a 10 hp inboard.

4HP is OK

4HP is plenty for a 22 foot boat, 6 is fine, 8 and more & then a modern 4 stroke engine is likely to weigh too much - bad for sailing performance, hard to carry home. My experience is with the J22 - 4HP will hold against almost any wind you are likely to see including thunderstorm microbursts. Keeping the prop in the water is another problem, so get the longest shaft that you can. You won't need 8-10HP until you have a 25 footer. A 2ishHP motor will work on calm days for docking, I suspect it just isn't likely to provide enough oomph on a bad day.

I'd go 4HP on a 22, save money over a 6, but 6 will work.

Be aware that many of the small 4 HP engines are the same as the 6 HP with a different carburetor. This is true of the 4HP Tohatsu, and its sister outboards which are sold under the Mercury and Nissan labels.
