Hoyt Boom issue

The jib outhaul on my Hoyt Boom is chafing at the boom exit block. It has failed in two races this year. Has anyone replaced the outhaul lie, inside the boom, with a wire rope? I'm think about 7 ft. would do allowing the sail to be furled. The wire would go from the clew to about one foot in the boom when the sail is deployed. The boat is a Schock Harbor 25.

Thanks all!

I don't know that boom, but I can't see a reason why wire would be a problem, however, you will need to change the sheave out for one made for wire.

@Shaggydog sure you can exchange a rope for wire. Folks have been doing that for halyards and out hauls for years. But... If your problem is "Chafe", the wire might delay the issue for a while, but not correct the problem.
Chafe occurs when a smooth surface becomes rough and the line or wire that runs across it is torn up. It may be better to examine the path of the out-haul and remove the sharp edges or rough places.
I replaced a wire rigged outhaul with a dyneema line. Lighter and stronger than steel wire. But you need to have a clean path and a smooth non friction path to start.

It would be helpful to see photos of the area. The Hoyt Boom is fairly unique and while many of us know about the boom, most of us have not had enough experience with it to offer an informed opinion.

As @jssailem said, if chafe is the problem replacing a rope with a wire will not eliminate the problem. A SS wire will not abrade as much but it will chew up the boom where the line is chafing. The solution will probably involve changing the path of the line more than changing the type of line, i.e., swapping rope for wire.

Send us some good photos.
