I think I will join the Catalina club. Thanks for the link.

Yeah that jib was labeled storm jib. There are 2 other jibs that are 130% I think.

The number on the main is the same as the boat number so must be the original. How can you tell it looks worn out? And what problems will I have with a worn out Main sail...other than it looking a little ragged.

Can you expand on what you meant by "your slot has been cut off below that (not normal)". Not following.

Thanks so much for your time and experience!!! I plan to put her in the water soon to just see how it goes. The rest of the boat actually looks really nice for its age.

Looks like others beat me to the sail answer. I dont often check the forum alot anymore.

As for the comment about your slot being cut off. In the picture your mast slot for the sail / boom should run the entire length of the mast from deck step to top of mast. sometimes if the bottom of the mast is damaged people will cut off a few inches to save the mast and keep using it. Most common damage is from dropping it while raising or lowering.

In your picture the sail stop seems to be at the end of the slot in your mast and it appears as though the groove has been notched out. This likely makes the mast lay flat for raising but is a bit abnormal as generally the boom would ride in that slot down toward the deck when the downhaul is pulled on. It's not something to stop you from sailing but something to just be aware of on your boat.

If you really want to know if the mast has been shortened measure it. On your model year the mast should be 25 feet. On the newer designs it is 24' 9". the cabin top is taller on the newer design boats by just a bit so the mast is shorter to still fit the One design perimeter.

You are correct -- bolt-rope on both the mast and the boom.
So my main sail has slugs going up the mast...but it has the bolt-rope going through the boom. I was thinking this was the original sail he got with the boat in 1971....? Plus the 458 is the sail/hull number so i just figured it meant the sails original (old as heck) Could this mean the sail is possibly newer than 1971 because it has slugs going up the mast?

Sorry my fault for not posting a photo of the whole mast. The mast slot does indeed run the entire mast from top, down to the deck. Does that change anything?

Also someone said my mast was not original from 1971. Any thought?

The age of the sail really doesn't matter, it is the condition of the sail. Is the fabric still crispy? is it stretched out? is there abrasion? is there evidence of sun damage? how is the stitching and threads?

They seem fine...but I really don't know what to compare them to.

They are sort of crispy I'd say.

Not sure what stretched out would mean or look like in a sail? Don't think its stretched out?

No abrasions and the stitching seems fine to me....?

Looking at what you posted it still looks like the track ends under the block on the boom. Either way to know if its original just shoot a picture of the end when its laying down. If it's round then its original. if its oval its off a newer style. Certainly your spreaders have been replaced as your year would have has cast lower should braces on the spreader attachment. They were prone to braking so Catalina recommended the upgrade you have .

So the mast is oval. Is it definitely from a Catalina you think?
Sorry the pics are confusing.. Looking at it I realize you are correct, that the opening does stop just under that stopper nut. Is that unusual? Whats up with the bottom foot or so being sort of flat?

Good to hear about the spreaders. I was meaning to look into that case I read about the old ones breaking. Do you think these are the good stainless steel ones?

Thanks so much!!!
