Counts as one..

..if you agree to discontinue coffee and take up tea if you generate 50 responses? With run - on tendencies of this board, you may want to reconsider. I'm on my fourth coffee already...

How about good red wine?

Anyone for recommending a favorite bottle of good red wine, price included? And what ports have good wine stores...

Red Wine

Carl and Jule, How about a 1997 Sterling Vineyard Cabernat Sauvignon ($20-25)? Paul Bednarzyk

Paul; We'll See Your Sterling and Raise You.....

...a Robert Mondavi 1997 Napa Cab (~$30). There is a neat wine store in Scituate, MA; can't remember the name, but there aren't that many there. Bummer of the year: The Black Dog Restaurant (Martha's Vineyard) is in a 'dry' town; great seafood, but strictly BYOB (ridiculous Mass 'blue laws'; relic of our Puritan past). Wines

Carl&Jule, How about a 1989 Mondavi Vintners Reserve, $130/bottle? Tried a sample while my wife and I were in Napa. First time I realized that Mondavi actually makes some very nice wines. Also a Bernardus Pinot Noir is very nice, 1995 said to be a good year. Paul Bednarzyk

Good Choice of wine!

Good choice! We actually got a '91 Mondavi Reserve for the first night on our new boat - we had tasted it while touring Napa [$25 a glass when they are usually free!] but it was a powerhouse - it really empowered every one of our taste buds, even the ones on the gums, and a whiff of it felt as satisfying to the stomach as bite of good steak. However, now that we have a boat, those little extravagances are few and far between. One good $10 everyday wine we recommend is a Rosemount Shiraz from Australia. We tend to get a little concerned when we start to spend a lot more money on our wine than on our food!!! Carl & Jule H340 s/v Syzygy.

Another Wine Choice

Chateau St. Michelle, Cabernet, Cold Creek Winery, '97, $23 at Sam's. Best deal around, smooth and flavorful, comparable to $75 bottles of wine. Best hard to find wine, Behrens & Hitchcock '98 Merlot from Mendacino. John, I like Sterling too. I was in Napa last month and came home with an assorted case of Sterling Cabs from the 80s. One of their best Cabs was '96, still somewhat available. Mark, H35.5 sailor and evolving wine snob

Super Bowl Wine

Opened a 94 Beringer Private Reserve Cab for the super bowl. Wow , I'd forgotten what a great expensive red wine tastes like! Sometiomes you really do get what you pay for. Paul B.... Have you tried the 96 Chateau St. Jean Cinq Cepages WOW - I've only got three left, if you ever fly to Mass I'll pop a bottle with you! Bob Knott H380

Favorite wines..

although the wines approaching $100 per bottle are very nice, they are far beyond my means. I usually partake of wines somewhat more modestly priced. The previously recomended Rosemont Shiraz is excellent at $8-10 per bottle, as is the Columbia Crest Merlot and Cab Sav at about $10-12 per bottle. My favorites a little more expensive would include the Sterling and Markham Merlots at about $15-18 per bottle. Anyone have any other favorites in that price range?

Red red wine

$13 - $20 we can recommend Chateau Souverain, Selby[Merlot], Atlas Peak Reserve[Sangiovese], Beaulieu...all cabs unless noted otherwise, and from what we hear and have tasted so far, '97 is turning out to be a classic year in CA Carl & Jule H340 s/v Syzygy

Mak, Stretch a bit higher and...

Mark, In the $20 dollar range try Fransiscan Cab it's AWESOME, usually $25.oo per Also try my secret best wine for the buck. Montes Alpha Cab, it's a Cab from Chile but I promise you'll love it. Alpha is their reserve wine but still only $22 or so, they make a cheaper wine which Wine Spectator gave a great score for their 97 vintage. Comes in wooden case, and each bottle is wrapped in rice paper. Great wine, great price, wonderful presentation. Makes Markham and those others pale by comparison. Enjoy Bob Knott H380
