My rudder has done the same as in this post. http://forums.hunter.sailboatowners.com/showthread.php?t=120238&highlight=tiller+repair I'm wondering has anyone actually completed this repair and how it turned out. I did a quick estimate on price from SBO and figure a new tiller would cost around $139.00. Doesn't seem too bad for such a work of art and peace of mind. On the other hand, I was figuring glue and stainless steel bolts should make a pretty hardy repair.

Any thoughts?

For the money, it seems like a new one would be my choice. You want your boat to look good, too. A repair like that is OK to get you through, but you will always wonder just how solid it is.

This is how I repaired mine. I has worked for the last 5 years. I used ss bar stock and Gorilla glue.

I shake my head at some of the folks who have deep pockets and short arms! Support SBO and buy a beautiful new tiller! (you can't take the money with you when you're resting in the ground!) ;);)

Not all of us here on SBO have deep pockets. I think that some of us view SBO as our affordable Yot Club. Some of us support SBO with our time and participation. I for one tend to be a Little old school and prefer to repair something before throwing it into the landfill.

This is what I plan to do... The SBO website says 21 days to ship. I want to sail sooner than that. (I am in the Sunny South where we can sail year round.) I'm pretty sure I can make a worthwhile repair that will hold up at least 3 weeks if not 3 years. I, too, want a beautiful tiller that I can be proud of. I'm on my way to the locally-owned hardware store to buy stainless steel bolts and epoxy. I'll be able to sail with that until my beautiful new tiller arrives. I hope this pleases everyone, even though I'm not doing this to please anyone other than my First Mate and me. I cannot imagine throwing the old tiller in the landfill. Can't imagine keeping it on the boat, either. I have no idea where I'll store it, but I will keep it just in case.

20 minutes with some glue, a couple of pieces of oak and a c-clamp saved me $100. It turned out great and you can't tell the diff. O also put a carriage bolt thru from top to bottom to keep it from splitting in the future. Since it was off the boat, I sanded it down and refinished it. It looked awesome!
