How Wide Should Your Berth Be

I have a narrow berth and last week the marina operator put a wide beam boat in next to me. The fixed height dock I tie to is about 6 inches below my rub rail. There is no protection from going under the dock. We don't have any tides on the great lakes. We do have a tide caused by wind and low air pressure that will cause the water level to drop 2 feet. Because of this I keep a 8 inch fender tied to the dock to help stop the boat going under the dock. My neighor has a aluminum rob rail 6" lower than mine. I invested a pair of 8" fender to protect me on his side. This leaves about 8 inches for hy boat to float left to right in before it hits a fender. The stern is cross tied to help center the boat but you can only do so much with a 8" window. Last year the fender rubbed off one accent strip. I just do not know how strong of a case to make to the marina operator or what my insurance company would say if I made a claim. PS my boat is a 2 year old H-36 and my neighbour has just got this first boat. All advice is welcome.

Maybe both of you should talk to the marina operator. It might be received better if you both have concerns. Have you discussed your concerns with your neighbor? Maybe he would have like concerns if you show him your missing stripes. It would be a shame to have two boats damaged because they're just too close. My two cents. JerryA

Can you and your neighbor secure your boats....

to each other? Perhaps mid ship cleat to mid ship cleat. Do this in such a way as you don't have to rely on one another to release the lines as needed. This will solve your problems most of the time.
