I'm wondering how/where to store sails during winter. This is my first boat (Hunter22) My boat will be outside for a couple weeks, then inside a pole barn (I think). Can I keep sails stowed in cabin?

should be fine for a short stay

I think your fine with your plan. If the inside of the cabin of the boat is prone to mold or condensation, or the pole barn is, you might consider your basement at home. Inside cushion's and other things ( foul weather gear, ect.) i also take home. Good ice sailing in the winter here, home bout you?

kidty corner to the northwest

I take my sails, cushions, and pfds home with me for these northern winters, and store them in the basement. The mice find the fabric too tempting, and condensation/mildew can sometimes be an issue.

Take them home

Properly folded, your sails will take up very little room. They should fit nicely in the bottom of a closet somewhere. Each batten should be marked as you remove it from the mainsail so that in the spring you'll know not only in which pocket to put it but also which end is the inner end and which is the outer. Winter Storage

I have always removed anything that I felt freezing may hurt or a mouse could chew. Living in farm country, our basement sees the occasional mouse. For this reason I got a clean 55 gal. drum, lined it with plastic, and kept my sails, PFDs, and other "chew-ables" sealed in it. The cushions are too big for a drum, so I put them up, and away from any walls. Mice tend to stay within 12" of walls so the more toward the center of the room the better.

Good Advise

I too have a Hunter 22. I have been in the process of getting it ready for winter. This is what I have done to the boat: I removed all the cushions and stored them in my house (spare room). I took all of the sails off of the boat and stored them in the house as well. I drained the water tank and the head. I opened up all of the storage hatches inside the boat. I added a chemical de-humidifier to the interior to keep mildew out (Got to hate that mildew). I took all the life jackets and other items that will hold water off of the boat. The other posts have good advise in them, especially if you are worried about mice. Good luck and feel free to e-mail me if you have any questions about the Hunter 22. I have done a bit of work to mine and I have taken some good cruises in mine (one lasted 10 days). You can look me up on the hunterowners.com web sight. Matthew Borders
