i am glad to see that there are some people in this world really mean it when they say that they respect good craftsmanship and or willing to put there money where there mouth is...

Funny that on Tuesday I signed on the dotted line for a new fence for the back yard. Over 100' of 6' tall white cedar fencing. We did not go with the lowest or even middle bidder. We actually went with the quote that was the highest by nearly 1.7k. Why? The guy physically sources all the white cedar, mills it (owns his own saw mill), and then hand makes each panel out of QUALITY white cedar not sap wood/junk white cedar... He does it in the traditional Maine fashion..

Also all the jobs to make this fence stay in Maine as does the money...;) Sometimes it is worth it to pay for a quality job.. Our last cedar fence lasted 15 years and should have easily lasted 25-30 but it was a "cheap" production built fence with sapwood posts. The previous owner got what he paid for, only we got stuck with it....

i am glad to hear that ...based on your description of your fence vendor you will probably get fence boards that are 13/16 or 7/8 in thick instead of that 5/8 crap that you buy at the big box stores and i bet it will conform to the lay of the land on your property as well.........i did a job about 7 years ago...the contractor came to me with the lay out and asked me to match his price (prefab vendor) i ran the numbers and found that i cold not even break even ......long story short ...i told him i would try it ..but it would be 1,500.00 higher than his price...when all was done i had 650.00 profit for about 3 weeks work after everything was paid including ins, taxes and all the underlying cost ...so when i say there is no way to compete i mean it ...the good thing is this confirmed what i knew on paper all along ......its better to not have the work
than to have it and be tired and broke and feeling like What the Hell just happened

Is the wooden boatyard still in business on Marthas Vineyard in Vineyard Sound? There is a book called "Wooden Boats' written about that place and just the sourcing of the various kinds of wood is a huge project. They would go down to Central/South America and hand select logs and stumps for making frames and knees out of really exotic woods. Great book if you want a good read.
