This is going to show why I do not post very often on this site. I do not do many upgrades or nearly enough maintenance on my boat. It was a gift to me last summer, and I have only managed to get it wet 7 times. 4 this year. Of those four times in the water two of them were sailing. The season is not entirely over for those of us who still hope, and on the bright side, I got out one more time than I did last year. I am hoping that at least one trip next year will include a little instruction during one of my California trips.

Wettest Summer in History
Toronto had more rain this summer than any year in the records. So many thunderstorm warnings that most of July and half of August were wash outs. I think the only weekend it didn't rain at least one day was the (long) holiday weekend at the start of August. The season ends for me on Sunday.

We are in Shelter Bay so we left south out of Swinomish Channel and just stayed in Skagit bay for our first sail.
Was the Best Sailing Season of My Lifetime
By default, actually, this has been the only sailing season I've had so far. So it has been very special. Taking up sailing has been my most engaging new endeavour since I started to snow ski during my college years. Timeline over the last year or so:
March 2007: Remembering how fun it was sailing around in my father's Lido 14 while growing up during the 1960's, got the idea to buy a cruising sailboat and berth it in Sausalito which is only 15 minutes bicycle ride from my home.
April/May/June 2007: Read up about sailboats. Then shopped around and eventually chose "Wildaire", a 36' 1980 Cherubini Hunter. The boat was a bit weather beaten, but basically well maintained. Still a sound and attractive boat.
June 2007: Discovered Sailboatowners.Com forum. Have been reading, asking and sometimes posting ever since.
End June 2007: Took a one week "9-5" Basic Keelboat and Coast Cruising course at Modern Sailing Academy with my daughter. 25kts+ winds every afternoon. What an introduction!
July - Oct 2007: While waiting for a Sausalito berth, and while Wildaire was still on the hard in Alameda, spent many a day working, improving, repairing.
October 2007: Sailed Wildaire to new berth in Sausalito.
October 2007-October 2008: I've sailed Wildaire now on SF Bay probably about 60+ times during all seasons fall, winter, spring and summer. Have learned a lot. And a have lot more to learn. Wife, friends and family enjoy the outings. Also have had many an afternoon working and relaxing at the marina.
Given all that is happening with the economy over the last year, and that last winter's ski season was mostly a bust (not much snow), taking up boat ownership and learning sailing has been sort of a lifestyle diversion with great benefit to me; and my wife has enjoyed as well. And the bicycle ride to/from the boat has burned off many cumulative calories.

We're Still Going Strong
Planning on going out this weekend for 3 days. Have missed going out 4 weekends since late Feb, was in Utah one of them for the arrival of new grand daughter. Congrats Maine Sail, she is looking like she is going to be a natural and seems to be right at home climbing up the companionway.
Like Maine Sail, I get on the boat every day, and don't feel like my life is in balance without at least being on the boat for a few hours.
We even just walk down to the Marina and spend the night on it in the middle of the week, just to feel the water under us as we drift asleep.
Can't believe it is fall already and starting to cool down. For us it was great and we only had to fire up the A/C three or four different times while out on the hook in August and early September. The rest of the time it has been mild and usually with a nice gentle breeze for sleeping. It has trully been a very safe incident free and blessed sailing season all year long for us. Hope it continues to be so for the rest of it.

Our summer was mixed. The weather up here was wet for the most part, although we did luck out a couple of times after the weatherman called for rain and it ended up fairly decent, and it kept the majority of the powerboats at home so the anchorages were less populated.
Highlight of the summer was our 1 1/2 week trip to Killarney and the North Channel, a 25 year dream.
Interesting highlights were
- being chased across Georgian Bay by a large front of a thunderstorm and having the winds go from 15 knots from the NW to 25 knots from the East
- being run over by a another front of a thunderstorm and experiencing 52 knot winds
- being out from shore far enough to not see shore for the first time
- having first-time boaters anchor out and raft with us on their first night out
- not having to be somewhere on a schedule and being able to push the boat the hardest yet for several hours.
- pulling up anchor and going for a perfect 2 hour sunset sail at my 14 yr.old daughters request.
