It's often said, and it's very likely true, that most boats can stand more beating up than the people that sail them. That said, what's the worse that a typical C30 Tall Rig can be expected to handle and come through safely?. Could those of you that have pushed the envelope to or near this point give me some idea;

To Fred F.

Thanks for your reply Fred. How did you have the boat rigged at the time or was the boat on bare pole. Were you going upwind or down or perhaps heaved to. Sure would like to know the details. Jim.

Details

I'm certain others have been in far worse. Catalina 30 standard rig. In this case it was between MDR and Catalina Island. Small craft advisory and predicted winds of 22 kts. We saw no less than 28 kts or better for most of the trip. The highest winds noted were 33 kts. Double reefed mainsail and just a bit of jib for balance. We were pointing and traveling diagonally up and across waves and diagonally down the backs. The boat didn't seem troubled at all and we sure got to the Isthmus fast. Fred F.

A number of years ago in Santa Cruz, Ca I raced on a C30 at the Catalina30 National Regatta. I was part of a national team that had crew members from different parts of the US and we are provided a loaner boat and we race the locals. It was a 3 day event and the winds never went below 30 knots. On the last day of the event the winds were over 40 knots. These winds are not uncommon for the Santa Cruz sailors. There were 19 boats racing. One C30 was dismated and 2 others lost their mainsails. On the last day were were slugging it out with 3 other boats for the #1 spot. We were not reefed and they weren't either. It was the most exciting sailing and racing I have ever experienced. It is amazing what can be done by a crew that know exactly what they are doing. I never thought twice about the weather. On the other hand, under my normal sailing situation (singlehanded or one or two crew) I never would ventured out in that weather. The Catalina line of boats, along with a bunch of other brands, are very sound and will take care of you in most situations long after you are not able to take care of your boat.

Sounds good.

I certainly enjoyed and appreciated the replies. Maybe next season I'll put just a little more adventurism in to my sailing now knowing that the boat itself is not the limiting factor. Thanks again.
