HI all I'm restoring my seidelmann 24-1 . It is a big job I am taking lots of pics , But that's for some other time. The rudder is in great shape out side of needing a good sanding. But I'm asking for advice as too what too finish it with. Alfred
How too finish my large wooden rudder ?

Seriously.. Will it be in the water all season, or is it trailer sailed?? If in the water then a barrier coat of something like Interprotect 2000 and then anti fouling that works in your area.. If trailer sailed, a nice outdoor rated polyurethane would be ok.. as would a tinted epoxy and a gel coat.
It looks like polyurethane. The boat will be trailered around the great lakes, mostly lake mi .I am retired and hope too have it in the water most of the time, other wise in my barn. Alfred
Alfred, if it is to be in the water most of the time, then you may want to have more than polyurethane. You may or may not want antifouling, but you do want the wood protected. Find out what people in your area use on wooden boats and try that. The fact that you trailer it some is overruled if you also leave it in the water for extended periods. -Paul

If its solid wood and you'd like to keep it natural, then I'd say use polyester resin on it for several coats. That however will darken it slightly so you could also use epoxy resin which can be had that is crytal clear although at slightly more then double the cost of polyester. In either case a quart should be enough.

We're trailer-sailors. On our mahogany rudder, I filled in the prop bites and dings with epoxy + sawdust, then a coat of runny epoxy, then a two-part Epiphanes clear coating. With inter-coat filing/sanding, of course. This looks nice and has stood up nicely for 4 seasons now. We baby it, and it's stored in the boat when we're on the hard.
