I'm just about to connect a Garmin sonar box to my Garmin GPS. I was thinking I'd just solder the various wires and shrinkwrap as usual. Then I got to thinking about the future.. when I add an autohelm it need to talk NMEA183 too. Plus a probable wind instrument, speed and repeater.... So, should I use some sort of junction/terminal box instead - are they all daisy chained together or are all NMEA ins stacked? Or will all the future commections be from one port to another?> Can someone give me a good strategy up front please? I'd hate to have to unwrpa all this week's shrinkwrap in the future.

Junction Box

I have not personally done it, but a friend's NEMA connections are all through a junction box. It is the same as mine for the Seatalk connections. Rick D.

J.B> & Terminal Strip

I agree with Rick, Anytime your wiring is expected to be revised, a watertight Junction Box & Terminal Strip makes good sense. Utilize a high quality (water-tight) J.Box & Heat-Shrink Sealed Ring Terminals (plated). This will provide for future flexability; without ommiting (most of) the advantages of sealed connections. When assembled, you can coat the T.S. with an anti-oxidant sealant, such as 3M “Skotchcoat” or “1602/1603 Insulating Sealer” et al. Regards, Gord

nmea/seatalk/pc interface

unfortunately, the protocols are not the same, you just can't connect them together- if you're going with raymarine equipment, you need their E85001 pc/seatalk/nmea interface box, around $150. the box translates the sognals and provides for the interface connections, to connect a oc, you also need-or can make your own serial cable-ray's is p/n E86001
