I'm looking for pictures or simple directions for wrapping line around the steering wheel for extra grip....size of line, how to distinguish top dead center, etc.
Trying to remember... I believe this is 3/16" line which took a continuous 100ft line per half wheel. You don't use the full 100ft but makes it easier to start and end the half-hitches. The wheel is off a H260 and have done the same thing to the H356.JimS/V Java
In Don Casey's series of books there is one something like, 101 projects to improve your boat. It has the directions you are looking for (or at least one version).
I did the same wrap as Jim on the wheel of my h31. The boat is used was "The Arts of the Sailor. Knotting, Splicing and Ropework. I used very fine line, about 1/8". Took forever but I think it was worth it.Chuck DickhutS/V Kililani
Great topic! I was thinking this would be a perfect winter project.Chuck, what type of line did you use?I was looking to do a French Hitching as I saw on this site http://www.mikelucasyachting.co.uk/articles/dec_rope_work.htm
To calculate the amount of line you need to know the diameter of the line and the inside diameter of the helm and the diameter of the helm tube. The inside diameter of the helm controls the amount of line you can rap.The distance around the inside of the helm divided by the line diameter is the number of turns you need: (pi*inside helm diameter)/line diameter= number of turns of lineThe distance around the helm tube times the number of turns of line gives you the total amount of line.(pi*helm tube diameter)*number of turns of line = total line neededIf you wrap tightly you can get by with less line.Sooooo for my hunter 37.5 using 1/4" line we getpi*(5'*12)/(1/4)= 753.6 use 754 turnspi*1*754=2367 inches or 197 feet!Bill Roosa
I have been OVERWHELMED by the responses. Thanks to all for the pictures, the instructions on how to achieve the pictures, and the calculation for amount of line (I can only imagine how frustrating it would be to end up with 6 inches undone after hours of work!!!).Just joined the Hunter club last month, and already VERY impressed. Thanks for the support!
I'd still like to know what material has worked best for anyone that's done this? What will hold up and hold the shape the best over time???Thanks all! (Share some pics if you have already done this as well)
