How to replace in-mast furling line

We have taken the mainsail and genoa off our new-to-us 2001 Beneteau 411 for cleaning and repairs. Now we wish to replace the in-mast furling line. We can easily pull it off the spool, but we wonder how to rotate the spool so the new line can be put back? Also, once we remove the line, how is the bitter end attached. We hate to get started without first knowing how to replace it! Thanks

What furling gear do you have? If it's like my sparcraft, rotate that "furling screw" (whatever it's called!) until the furling line comes to the bottom (when the sail is completely unfurled the line covers it and vice versa), remove the screw shown with the black arrow, replace the line and rotate it back so it fills the "furling screw" again.
I hope you understood what I wrote....sorry it's my English and especially when it comes to terminology.....

PS: In fact the only problem you may have is to remove the screw if it's corroded. Besides this (at least with my sparcraft) everything else is easy.

Furling control line replacement

1. Remove the sail
2. Fully unroll the control from the endless screw.
3. Loosen the furling control locking screw on the endless screw
4. Remove the furling control from its housing
5. Install the new control and make sure that it is flush, but not sticking out.
6. Lock the new control with the locking screw.
7. Proceed with rotating the endless screw with the number of rotations required to roll in the new furling control
8. Re-set the mainsail.

We've now removed the furling drum. We found that this was necessary in order to get to the knot at end of furling line. Now that we have it out and accessible, how should we service the bearings? Is it just a matter of flushing with fresh water or is there something else we could do to reduce friction?

Yesterday we washed and lubed the furling drum. It did make it easier
to turn, but it's still far from easy. We then used the line
previously coiled around foil to wind some new 3/8" Sta-set line onto
drum. At various points the drum would jam. By jockeying drum back and
forth we were able to complete the process. We have no idea what's
causing the drum to jam. We sprayed McLube onto bearings repeatably
without much improvement. Does this mean we need to have drum rebuilt
or could there be an alternate explanation?

Sorry...do you mean long in size or long in time? If it's size then I have 15 meters of 10mm spectra line. If you mean time then it really depends on the use, quality of line, if you wash it etc, etc.
