We bent the mast on our Venture 22 in half and are currently looking for repair options, or in need of a new one.

Thanks,

Ouch.

Just guessing, but in my opinio, the best option would be to replace the mast. If you can find a place that sells/repairs used boats, they might have a mast that's close in cross-section to yours. If it's too long it can easily be cut down. You can probably remove and reuse all the hardware from your broken mast.

I've heard that some places will splice a broken mast back together, but it seems that all the labour involved there would make that option about equal to just replacing it.

Tyles, your boat/mast is small enough that you should be able to repair it by sleeving the two pieces together. Any good rigger or repair shop should be able to do this for a lot less money that buying a new mast-- unless you find some great deal. The stresses to your mast on a 22 foot boat with a limited sail plan are neglible and would not effect the repair adversely or the potential performance of your boat. Good luck and good sailing, Ron

My experience with Sparcraft masts for the Newport 41S which were sleeved and spliced as originally manufactured is the sleeve/splice section is generous and as best I recall, not at the spreaders.

I think (just guessing) that the highest stresses occur at midpoint between the spreaders and the base. I'd stay stay away from there. Also, keep in mind that, unlike steel, aluminum is weakened at the weld.

I've read it is standard practice to cut down long mast for shipping and splicing them in the field before stepping. . .

My mast is spliced together just below the spreaders and lower shroud tangs. . .seems to be fine, I can get a pic if you want. . .

The Newport 41S mast was riveted in a diamond pattern at the splice. I can't say if it was in consideration of welding metallurgy as dscribner mentioned or a time and cost saving method.

I am guessing that there are probably 100's of these masts around. You may want to check out the salvage yards. I would also think that the used option would be much less expensive and a lot safer than depending on someone knowing what they are doing.
