How to remove the propellerblades ? - MD6A Combi -

Hallo all,

This afternoon I tried to disassemble the two adjustable (rotating)
propellerblades. I would like to check the markings on them because
one does not seem to be attached in the correct position.
So I unscrewed the four allenbolts that tighten the two coneparts
together and the centerbolt.

Standing behind the prop, facing foward, I tried to pull off the
aftcone. But it doesn't move a bit...
I can move the frontcone three cm forward on the shaft untill it hits
the stern.

Studying the Combi overhaul drawings I got the idea that the aftcone
should fall off after releasing the bolts and it should then be
possible to pick the blades out. Is that so ? How to proceed ?

You should be able to remove the rear hub, but you need to
unscrew the screw from the shaft.(don't loose the key) When
you reassemble the blades, count the teeth on each side,
line them up, and you should be okay. (the front hub is
held by the sleeve)

Update: I have rechecked the "Combi Instructions" which is
downloadable under "files".
In the bottompicture on the last page the hub, prop and key can be seen.
I have taken out centerbolt # 13 and the four allenbolts # 4. There
was no key or I dropped it...
So the hub should come off now but it doesn't... any clues ?

The woodruff key (semi-circle bit of steel) will be inside the bronze
hub in the grease or still in the slot in the shaft. The aft end of the
hub should be able to be tapped off. Use a wooden or rubber mallet.

Steve is right; give it a good wack and the hup may come
free. Just watch out: should the whole prop come off, than
you have disengaged the sleeve (held by 2 pressure rings).

You could also use a chissel and carefully tab the chissel
with a hammer around the place where the 2 hubs meet. Once
the hub brakes loose, it comes off easy.

Thank You Wilhelm and Steve.
Yesterday I did trie carefully to tap it off with a mallet but no
result. I will retry this, as I understand from your words that brute
force should get the hub in the mud.

I think my suggestion to break loose the 2 parts with a
chissel is better idea because that way you wount disengage
the sleeve (and have a major problem on your hands)

I have now persuaded the US Distributor that I can again supply Beta
Engines to Vega Owners in the USA and Canada.

I know this sounds commercial but believe me the profit I make is
negligible. I was stopped selling Betas to the USA/Canada due to the
price difference with your local Beta Supplier!

Full installation notes, photos and me on teh end of a phone or interent
for all your installation questions. I have personally installed 11
Betas into Vegas and in the UK we now have over 120 Betas in Vegas so I
have seen all the problems and overcome them! Installation can now be
done with two competent DIY guys in 2 - 3 days. It's not rocket science!

Steve, could you please give me a ball park figure for the engine,
gearbox, shaft, propellor, controls, wiring loom and panel (offlist if
you like) so I know how much cash to start saving up. Delivery to
Toronto area would be substantial part of the price, I imagine.Cheers,

Hey Marie, my Vega is hull no 2915 (Mystic Rose). She is apparently the only red hulled Vega in North America. I just bought her this past spring and haven't sailed her yet. She needs new sails. Not sure about the engine. Do you like your Vega? How long have you had her? Are you sailing in the St Lawrence? Do you know a good source for Volvo parts, or for sails in Canada. I hope to sail down the St. Lawrence to Quebec and on to Newfoundland in my Vega one day. Cheers, Trev

I got mine last spring too but I've sailed her a bit. I love my Vega, she
needs new sails too, I've ordered a main for this year, the genoa will be
next year. I'm sailing her on a little lake near Montreal called "lac des
deux-montagnes" but we will go down the st lawrence next summer. For the
volvo part there are several dealers that you can find on www.vovlo.com and
for the sail, I would personnaly recommand eather

(Alan Critchlow) both have been (Yvan) or are (Alan) Vega owner.

My motor is still running but the compression is quitte low so I might have
to make a decision about it...
