How to remove rudder?

Can anyone describe the process of removing the rudder? It seems to have a large nut on a bolt that goes through the hull to the tiller. I don't have a socket that fits that bolt, it seems about 30mm.

Removing rudder

David
Rumery's just rebuilt my rudder. I will get Dave from rumerys to explain what he did. He stated it was simple to do.

Rumery's Boatyard

I just spoke with Wayne from Rumery's boat yard. First, I have to say that Wayne was very friendly and forthcoming with information. I really appreciate that he made the time to speak with me.

If I made good notes, here is the process:
1) remove quadrant from rudder-stock
2) from rudder area, remove large nut from rudder-stock
3) remove pintle screws or remove gudgeon
4) lift rudder-stock to allow rudder to pull out

At this time, inspect the pin on the rudder (that fits into the heel fitting) for cracks or chips.

Rebuilding rudder:
Wayne said that the rudder on Black Pearl was mahogany. They used the old rudder as a pattern and cut 3/4 plywood as replacement wood. Instead of tapping the wood, they overdrilled holes to 5/8 inch and epoxyied in a plastic tube that could then be machined to take the 3/8 inch bolts.

Now, if anything above looks wrong, it doesn't mean that Rumery's did the job wrong but most likely that I took inadequate notes and didn't understand completely.

Please fill in any gaps or incorrect statements that I made!

to remove the rudder post or not

I'm commenting on this thread mainly to get it back up to the top and talked about again. Another thread has merged with this topic. From my initial conversation with the folks at Rumereys, I didn't write down anything about removing the rudder post or even lifting it temporarily, though I think they probably said this and I just didn't write it down.

I'm hesitant here to use mechanical advantage but I think my next step is to put a puller on the rudder and rudder post to push the rudder post up and out of the rudder. I think that the top of the rudder is bronze (has a nice gold color under the paint) and that the rudder post is seized in it.

Does this sound like the best next step?

Push or pull

Dave, ya' gotta' get a better explanation from Mummerys. Find out whether you can pull the stock up from within the boat (happily you needn't grovel in the lazarette) or whether you can push up from within the prop cutout. Is the stock a square-section chunk inserted into an internally square fitting on the rudderhead? Do I understand that there's a bolt accessable from within the cutout? If so you might back it out a turn or two and push it, press it, thwock it upwards. You might use a sacrificial bolt so as to not damage your bronze one. You might use a drift so that you're abusing the top of the hole rather than the threads. Same trick if it's a nut but mushing threads, like I barely got away with on my propeller shaft, is a worry.
