I purchased the lewmar service kit and pulled the drum from one of my older (1970's) Lewmar 7 winch. I know I need to replace the prawl springs, but I can not figure out how to get remove the prawls. I tried just pulling them out and they will not come out - is there a trick? Also - this is just the first one, and according to many pics, there are typically a set of berings around the main shaft. Mine does not have any bearings - I am guessing this is normal and maybe bearings were added later - or for winches "better" than the 7. Sound right? Thanks!

Prawns or pawls???

You need a different technique for each :) Just kidding... Seriously, the pawls should come out very easily, just watch the spring, they love to leap over the side.

A hint

When working on a winch on deck take a nice size carboard box, cut a hole in the bottom the diameter of the winch base, remove one side of the box and work on the winch with the open side of the box away from the water. Any things which go SPROING! will fall into the box and not into the drink. I even taped the box down so it would stay put during the work. If the winch is on the mast or some other vertical surface then it's a whole new universe of problems. Good Luck, Mike

removing pawls

I have found on my Lewmar winches that sometimes the pawls will be a little bit hesitant to lift straight up when in the extended or open postion. I put one finger over the top to prevent it from jumping. I then open and close it while gently lifting up on the pawl. Watch for that little spring as it gets near the top. Once everything is cleaned and dried, coat them with a light machine oil only, not winch grease. The box is a great suggestion
