How to reef?

I know there have been many postings recently regarding reefing of the main. Can anybody send me some step by step either pictures or diagrams on how to reef an O'Day 23. I asked the previous owner, and his response was I never reefed her. I asked a neighbor with a similar boat and received the same reply. When I attended sailing school last year, we reefed with a reef hook. I understand why you reef, I understand the reef points and how to wrap and secure the extra sail. Without the hook, I just do not know how to secure the new tack created when reefing. This is my first sailboat, so any help would be appreciated. Also, if my terminology is off please be patient. With all of the recent postings regarding reefing, I feel it is essential to fully understand this procedure before setting out with the family.

Need a few details

Warren - Reefing systems varry from boat to boat, even in the same model sometimes. How is your boat set up? Are there blocks on the boom? On the mast? You likely have some varriation of a line tied 2/3 or so of the way aft on one side of the boom, up through the tack, then down and through a block on the other side of the boom, then a hook at the mast. If you hook the luff onto the mast and pull the line tight the sail is reefed. Make sense? If not, let me know what your hardware is - I'm sure we can figure it out. Justin - O'day Owners' Web

Reef & unreef

This article (linked below) describes 3 different reefing systems. I'm sure you can use one of them. They recommend practicing before you get underway. Excellent advice before trying any new manuver. Happy sails, MArk

current reef gear

There is nothing currently on the mast or boom to support reefing. What would I need to purchase and install to make reefing easy and quick.
