How to put Catalina 22 on trailer?

Hello! I just recently purchased a catalina 22 swing keel. I am looking to take it out of the water and put it on the trailer for the winter to save some money. I have never done this before and I am wondering what to do with the mast when I take it town and lay it on the boat. How do i tie it down so it won't fly off when driving on the freeway? Do I need any special devices to hold it in place?

Also, What type of wood can I use to replace the old wood on my trailer. I believe they are called the trailer bunks, but they are curved a small amount and I am wondering what type of wood does this.

Thanks!

On the Mac 25 I used termite treated pine 2x6 x 10'. Try to find as clear as possible , that is without knots. They go on flat and the boat will cause them to curve. To attached the carpet I used stainless steel staples. Most trailerables have a mast crutch rigged up at the stern rail. Mine was a 1" square tube attached to the gudgeon. After lowering the mast you can rest the base on the bow pulpit or in my case on the bow roller. Some have fashioned a hanger from the bow pulpit that bolts to the mast. The center of the mast is supported with a block of wood on the mast step. I used to use one of the fenders. If you do a search for mast crutches you will find a variety of ideas.
Leave the side stays attached, just coil them up and bungee to the mast. Lots of bungees work well. There are some looped bungee with a plastic ball that make life easier.

Here is a nice article on the whole process. It looks like his bunks are shaped by the center support.

yah treated deck boards like for your house work just fine the carpet is just indoor outdoor kitchen carpet in a color you like :)

my mast sits on the front rail and is lashed down with a ratchet strap if I'm taking a long haul bungie if I'm just going home from the lake.

But everything geo said is pretty much right on the button.

GeoffB,

Your timing is GREAT. We'll have two C-22's rigging and launching at Dana Point this Friday morning. One is a swing keel, and our's is a MK-II wing keel. Should be arriving at the boat ramp about 9:30 - 10:00. You'll be able to see the trailering and rigging process at once. If you can't make it Friday morning, we'll be pulling our boats Sunday morning. We'll be down at the north end of the harbor at the guest docks. I believe my slip will be right along the sidewalk. We'll be ariving late Saturday afternoon after we finish the Border Run race from Newport Harbor down to Dana Point.

Thanks for the advice everyone. I will head over to the store and buy some pressure wood and try it out!

I'm to assume that the trailer you're using comes with the boat and was built or modified for this boat.

If so, using the measurements of the present wood, go to Lowes or Home Depot and replace with treated lumber for building outside decks. You can also purchase at these two places the cheapest out door carpet.

Attach the wood the same way the old planking was done. You may need to use a ratchet strap to pull the center down. If the center will not twist then set the boat on the bunks attached at the front and back and attach the center after the hull does the twisting for you.

If this boat does not have a stern pulpit or a mast crutch, you'll need something to support the back end of the mast. A small step ladder or one of those 2 or 3 step stools used around the inside of the house would be about the right height, you'll need lots of rope to help tie it and the mast down to the hull.

You're a luck fellow to have some expert help to lower the mast and recover this boat.

Geofb,
Our process is pretty simple. We have a C25 so they should be similar.
1. We bought a $2.00 swimming noodle that has a hollow core the full length.
2. Cut 2 2foot sections and slit one side of each length wise, like a hot dog bun.
3. Sandwiched the bow and aft safety rail with the slit lengths of noodle, like a hot dog.
4. Wire tire the noodles in place.
5. Drop the mast and let it rest on the noodles.
6 Lash the mast to the bow and aft safety rails.
7. We have a large piece of Styrofoam (about 2'x2'x2' that we notched a V in one side) and rest the center of the mast in the V and place midship, then lash the mast to the safety lines.
Good Luck

Five quarter

GeoffB,

I'd seriously reconsider using five quarter lumber deck lumber as bunk boards. One of my friends used it, then he got to learn how to fix the hole in his boat when the port side failed and the bolster went right through his boat.... My advise, stay with the pressure treated 2X6. Just as easy to work with and will not break. Oh, my friend? His trailer now has 2X8X12 bunks.

GeoffB....Missed you at Dana Point this weekend. Had two C-22's rigging and launching that could've helped by observing the boats from road ready to sail-a-way.
