Hi, Does anyone out there have the name of a good product that we can use on our new beige interior upholstery to protect it from absorbing any spills. You know the kind, red wine, etc..... I've heard about SCOTCHGUARD, but have been told it is extremely flammable, which doesn't sound like a good idea on a boat. Any ideas?

Check the label

Scotchguard may be flammable while it's being sprayed. Check the label to see if it looses tts potency when it dries. It always seems to be highly recommended ans I would think it would not be too often recommended if it retained its potency.

Should be fine

It's the carrier fluid that is flammable - once it dries, no problem Don

Recomended

If it is being highly recommended and used in the automotive industry (much higher potential for accidents involving fire), it can not be any more dangerous in the marine environment.

3M Scotchgard is the way to go

I think I can speak as someone that knows a little about 3M Scotchgard since my company uses about 2500 gallons of the concentrate a year. The aerosal cans that you buy in the store do have a flammable carrier and as such should not be applied near an open flame. Once dry it will not impact the flammability of the fabric. Do them out on the dock and you won't have a problem. I would pretest a small inconspicuous area and let it thoroughly dry before doing the entire piece. You may also find that the fabric was already protected. Most upholstery fabric available today comes with fabric protection already on it. Try testing with a drop of water to see if it beads up. If it does, then you just saved yourself some money. I would suggest that you reapply 3M Scotchgard every season though, just to keep the protection at sufficent levels.
