I've a shelf above the wash basin. Under this shelf I mounted a chrome plate Wine Glass rail rack to hang some wine glasses. Question is how can I prevent the chrome rack from rusting or corroding in hot & humid condition of the cabin?

Put some chrome polish on it every now and then.

I read using a small piece of aluminium foil, wet with water, it remove rust from SS by rubbing. Will try it on chrome to see if that will work. But is after corrosion. I should try chrome polish as prevention as suggested by Thecuscus.

Ken,

As I see it, the problem with chrome is that it is a plated finish.
What metal lies beneath is a dissimilar metal & therein lies the problem.
Chrome is plated anywhere on top from stainless, to copper, to bronze, to pot metal etc.

A 316 stainless all-body material would be the best way to go.
If you pick 304 SS. the carbon steel WILL show rust over time.
Beware of claims of "MARINE GRADE" parts.
IT'S THREE TIMES THE PRICE WITH 1/3 THE QULAITY IN MOST CASES.

Buyer beware........

Chrome looks good on cars, not boats.................

Shoot it with a good quality clear varnish. Use multiple coats and it should hold up inside for years. Chief

I have some classic cars and the quality of new production chrome is not the same as the old stuff, what took 20 years to rust before will rust in just a few years now. I have recently started powder coating parts. The process is not that difficult or costly, it comes in many colors, including brushed or high polish chrome. Youtube has lots of videos of the steps involved.

Kudos on the powder coating. Just stay away from the kitchen utensils. :)

We have had incredible results using Spotless Stainless. We have been using it for 10 months now and it does do exactly what it is supposed to do, including retarding rust, just as it claims to do.
As an old timer with a lot of commercial vessels in my background, phosphoric acid (Ospho) was my go to product for rust. But as the quality of stainless seems not to be what it once was, the acid did clean the rust off, but it also seemed to actually be increasing the returning rust.
After reading here about Spotless Stainless, we bit the bullet and spent the big bucks.
It works. There is a learning curve, it can't dry so we cover it w/ plastic shopping bags wrapped around the areas it's working on, etc, but it should work great inside on chrome w/o a lot of hassle.
It has actually decreased the return of rust topside significantly, I swear! We never wash the boat after a sail, and we get a lot of salt on everything, beating between the islands down here.

Wow! plenty of options. I've Nevrdull, Lemon Pledge and Spotless Stainless in my locker. These are I suppose to be used after rust starts. Was thinking of preventing so clear vanish could be the way to go. Powder coating? Sounds challenging to me. Looks like my weekend is set for experimenting. Thanks. :)

I don't see why you put up with the problem

in the first place. It's not made for that environment. Why not replace it with one made from a more suitable material ?

Capta is dead right, I keep Spotless Stainless on the boat now, and at the very least gives you a little something to fool with on your down time. And it does work great. Varnish or clear coat? C'mon folks, have you ever started messing with a brass whatever that said it was highly polished, and turns out it probably is, but they put a coat of clear over it to preserve it? Start taking that coat off and it'll never be the same. I can't imagine the horror of whatever kind of 'coating' besides wax maybe that starts peeling off. My God.

And before I forget it, and I'm not knocking ANYBODY here, but there is a major marine parts company that everyone has heard of, that routinely chrome plates brass or bronze. I don't know IF it is brass or bronze and it doesn't matter. What I do know is, when that beautiful chrome finish starts coming off, the part is wrecked. I would rather had the stainless part that loses a little of its luster without having to replate, or replace. I promise you that you will regret painting anything on chrome. By the time you sand it for the bite, you've ruined it anyway. Wax will do. Spotless or whatever.
