This must be a stupid question since I can't find an answer for it on the internet, but since it's itching me here it goes. How do you operate the 2 speeds on a Barient 21 2-speed self tailing winch? I asked a lady at a Hunder dealer and she told me that you wind 1 way then you operate at one speed and if you wind it the other way, then it is the other speed. But I am not sure that is right since the self tailing is set up to go just 1 way. Also it seems that the winches on my boat has rachet action - which I like - but that seems to prelude the winding counter clockwise as the lady suggested. So if anyone can explain to me how to switch the winch from one speed to the other, I would appreciate it very much. Tuyen

she's right

Tuyen, The winch drum only turns in one direction, but the speed at which it turns is determined by which direction you're turning the winch handle. If you turn the handle one direction, you get one gear ratio. The other direction gets you the other gear ratio.

What about the rachet action?

OK. You confirmed it. But what about the rachet action? When does it stop the rachet action and engage the other gear? Thanks for your reply. I will check it out this weekend.

"ratchet action"

The "ratchet action" that you refer to is not like the ratchet in a socket wrench. Any time you're turning the winch handle in the opposite direction from the direction the winch drum turns, you've engaged the other gear. The gear ratio may be so low that you haven't noticed the drum actually turning in that gear. If you take a half turn of the winch handle in the higher gear ratio, and then turn the handle back to take another run at the higher gear, then you're actually winding half a rotation of the handle in the lower gear.

I really have to check this out then

So not only I ratchet to position the winch for another strong pull (or push), I actually move it some more? They should make the socket wrench work that way!! Fred, thanks. Hopefully I get more time to scratch that itch. Tuyen

Tuyen, it wouldn't work correctly on a socket

wrench because you wouldn't be able to 'loosen' a bolt/nut. A winch turns in only one direction, a socket must be able to turn in both directions!

Not sure if you've gotten this answer yet

Tuyen -- Not sure if you've gotten a complete answer yet. The winch will always turn in only one direction. The direction that you wind the handle determines the speed. There is no ratcheting on a self-tailing winch. The advantage is that you can handle headsails single handed. They are super-sweet. Good Luck! Dave
