I am trying to figure out if I can go to a 3 blade prop on my Oday 30. I have a 1982 Universal 16hp.Unfortunately I have no way of measuring rpm's. My gps gives me speed. Can I puchase at an autoparts store or do I need a marine gauge? Also Can I install myself or best to have done? I am fairly mechanically oriented. thanks for any/all replies

Tack

Hello Mark, You can very easily switch to a three blade. The three blade, if set correctly, will not produce any more load then its two blade counterpart. The three blade will however increase your motoring efficiency by apx. 30%. This will allow the boat to motor slightly higher and help it to maintain the boat speed when confronted with adverse conditions. Your 82 vintage vessel was a change year for Oday so you vessel may not have the same prop install when comparied to sister ships. 1982 and older use 15 x 9 three blade 1982 and newer a 15 x 8. You will need to let me know what your current two blade is we can cross ref. it over to the three blade for you. I went to Westerbeke’s web site and I could not find a page, which would allow me to see the info need to determine the tack requirements. I would have to assume that you will need to go through a Westerbeke dealer to acquire one and not an autoparts store. Installation should be very straightforward. I know that in the case of my Yanmar, it was very easy for me to replace. Westerbekes web address is http://www.westerbeke.com/ Good luck. Kevin

Diesel Tach

Check with Universal about installing a tach on your engine. The main problem is with the engine sender - the tach is the easy part. If Universal does not make a tach sender for your application (like most engines) your will have to have a take-off wired to your alternator. A good generator or alternator shop can do this for you. Then install a tach from West Marine, etc. You can calibrate with an AC shore powered fluorescent light. Put a small piece of tape on your crankshaft pulley. At 1800 RPM the light will show four stationary tape markes hovering at 90 degrees.
