I would like to add a V H F to my 22 O'Day- How do I do this- Is it best to run the wire up thorough the mast and put the arial on top? Gordon/

you got it. coax cable through the mast. Antenna on top. You may be able to use the existing hole that accomodates the steaming light wiring at the base of the mast, but you will likely have to drill a new hole near the top. Remember that when planning on how and where to install the bracket that will hold the antenna, you need to accomodate the swinging arc of your windex.

What about a splice?
When I got my boat the PO had severed the wires at the mast step and I need to splice a new coax wire going from the radio to the base of the mast. I have a splice kit but I can't tell if I have to shave half of the jacket off to expose the innter core wire and slide that into the splice junction. Have you guys ever done something like that? The splice kit looks like a chinese finger trap with a pin coming out of the center. Thanks, Gerard

On the end of the coax you will need to trim back the black rubber,braided wire and the white insulation.You will need to have about 1/4 " inch of copper showing.Next you will carefully trim back about another 1/4 " inch of just the outside black rubber jacket.Carefully pull back the braided wires.None of the wires should touch the copper center. Insert the connectoruntil the white insulation bottoms out.Now depending on the type or brand of connector you will either screw the out piece on ,which will force "those little teeth "to bite into the insulation ,or you will crimp them with a GOOD quality crimper. The center copper should be just about flush with the end of the connector. I hope this helps
