I just read this on another bb and thought it was great... every time i get waked by some obnoxious sob in a sea ray here it is... In Response To: How often do you make Security Calls? security security security. northbound sea ray, driving eratic, leaving huge wake, throwing beer cans, appears intoxicated... locations is marker # 42 near lake worth or whatever............... you'd be surprised at the results,,,,every tom dick and harry repeats it, and the bears in the boats look for them.......works every time

Now that's something I can use...

I'll mount that up beside the radio Would have come in handy over memorial day weekend, the nuts were out in droves

I like it!

What a great idea! I'm going to try it on the very next wake moron I see. Rodney Kidd C-38 #297, Flying Bear

Sue the wake morons

File a claim in maritime court for wake damage or injuries. Even if he does'nt recieve a judgement I can almost guarantee he will not soon forget the expireance in court. If that don't work have your bottom cleaner send him a message by bending his props foreward. Oops! Sorry I did'nt mean for you to hear that. I was just thinking outloud. Seriously, don't stoop to their level. always take the high road and show those motorhead wake morons who the real seamen are.

wake morons???

I think your reaction to a 'wake' in public domain is very much worse than any wake could be. I'd have to lean towards the worst crime and that would definately be 'false accusations'. I believe if you put your name and boat attached to your message the coast guard will extinguish your fire. By the way, how do you get even with mother nature?

AMEN!!

Amen......Listening to you people carry on about wakes I wonder if any of you ever leave the intercoastal or lakes??? If you do venture to the open sea do you file complaints in the courts or on the radio about the heavy wakes and swells out there?? Maybe its time to look at your selves and leave all the other boaters alone. Unless you really do see those beer cans going overboard.

I'm out in open water all the time.

And there are always wakes.....No biggy......BUT there are wakes and then there are WAKES....So we are responding the the ridiculous wakes caused by motorboaters that could have been easily avoided had they had a brain in their heads......Or how about in a nice anchorage and some big a** boat comes down off plane right before they arrive to where you are. Their huge displacement wake slams into your quietly anchored boat broadside and knocks your boat silly spilling hot water and pasta all over the galley..........at that time I'm thinking where's my shotgun. Why would you put down people because they don't like inconsiderate boaters.....unless perhaps you are one?

Wakes/open water

Big difference between wakes/waves in open water and idiots not knowing what a "no wake buoy" looks like. What p**** me off is that we have three marinas tucked into a cove with "no wake buoys" at the beginning of the first marina all the way to the third. You would be surprised how many idiots slow down at the first buoy only to speed up once passed it! Then slow down once they get to their marina. I am thinking about investing in a potato gun and working on my aim! Sean "roll the dice"

Waves I expect, wakes can be a surprise

Out for a quiet sail with my two sons, going under the Jamestown bridge, when an SOB in a 40+ Viking passes within 15' at full bore. We were almost knocked down and had kids falling everywhere. If they weren't so lazy maybe they could take those things off auto pilot and learn a little seamenship. RREgge S/v Allie Kat

I always find it unbelieveable

how stupid power boaters can be. Last year we were out sailing and there wasn't much wind so we were not going anywhere when the large powerboat comes flying down the river with this huge wake and passes us by 15 to 20 feet, really knocking us around. It was the Coast Guard Aux on patrol. Now those guys SHOULD know better.

For every stupid powerboater story...

there's a stupid sailboater story.

When it comes to wakes we almost have to give

some motorboaters a break....sometimes it is not easy to not make any wake. Sailboats are inherently less likely to create wakes so its easier for us us to look down our noses at motorboaters........ But with that said it seems like they are not as attuned to what wakes they do produce as sailboaters are

J

Justin

That's not true!

There are what 10X? 50X? as many powerboats as sailboats. Odds would definitely indicate more stupid powerboat stories available, all things being equal, which of course their not. ;)

In Harms Wake

Peggy, I was wondering when you would remind us that sailor's, while existing in a state of grace, are not completely infallable. In a passing situation, in a narrow channel, we have to realize that unless we slow down and give room, we force the power boater to remain on plane to pass us in a reasonable length of time. Using 16 to tell the other yacht your intentions, helps to remind other Sea rays to slow down also. I'd also like to remind everyone that using a secuity call should not be taken lightly. (dan, if your out on the water in memorial day, July 4th, etc., expect a few novices to be out there also.) In 5 years on the water, I've only run into one instance where there a true "hazard to navigation" behind the wheel of another vessel. After talking to the guy a few seconds, I realized nothing I said could make a difference.

What makes you think that only sailboats

Can be "victimized" by wake? Or that wake is the only thing that creates problems for other boats?

The problem with Power Boaters!

"Powerboaters are always trying to get somewhere....sailors are already there!" by a person of wisdom (not I)

Wakes are one thing...

but this really gets me too! Busy weekend, lots of boats coming and going, winds blowing, and here's this "nit wit" sailor tacking up the channel. It was like a "chineese fire drill" with all the boats trying to keep out of his way. Is that supposed to be "cool" sailing in a crowded harbor with a narrow channel? I think it is STUPID. BTW, there was nothing wrong with his motor. Bottom line is, there are inconsiderate sailors as well as powerboaters as much as we sailors would hate to admit it.

Agreed

How about the last time some sailboat skipper turned into the wind to drop the sails.. right in front of you! I also want to refer back to Peggie's comment earlier: wakes are even worse on powerboats. Heck, some of things are four stories high, and you're talking about a 15' swing in a good beam wake! Incompetence is incompetence, no matter how many horsepower you have.
