Hmmm. Sure am glad I asked you guys and didn't just plow ahead with some half baked fabrication! I had already talked to Buck Algonquin and seemed to hit a dead end there. I can see why from the page that Tommay posted, but maybe I could make one of those work. I'll try the two places Maine Sail mentioned... One thing I know: < $100 to buy one already made out of bronze, >$800 to have one fabricated and that ain't happening.

Also, the motor and strut were perfectly lined up but it seemed that flat portion of the hull with bolt holes was off. When we pulled the boat, the shaft was rubbing up against the starboard side of the log, which is probably what lead to it's disintegration. It's seems the new log is going to have to be shimmed out a little on one side.

Or, there is what was originally designed for the boat - a bronze stern tube. It can be purchased from this source Admiral C&B Propeller at likely a good price. They are also very knowledgeable and will give you good advice for free. It's worth a call and is a lot easier than redesigning a critical part of the boat. http://discountprops.com/

I'm leaning toward replacing what was there previously, however there doesn't seem to be anyone anywhere with the exact same thing, so some redesigning appears to be necessary. I called this place and unless he completely misunderstood me, he appears to have nothing like what I need.

Update - Stephan, please let me call Admiral C&B on Friday and also another company that may have the part. The guy that fixed my stern tube replaced it with the same bronze stern tube. If need be I will give him a call and find out where he purchased the part. Everything seems to be closed for the long holiday weekend. Will call on Monday and let you know what is available.

Not good news. I called Admiral C&B (discountprops.com) this morning. The foundry, Dahmer Marine is out of business. They made the casting for the stern tube and the prop shaft strut for the older Hunter boats. Ed Schenck has written earlier that the strut is no longer available. The same seems to be true for the stern tube.

Your idea to fabricate a stern tube from stainless steel may be the best alternative. Weld a SS pipe of the correct size to a square base. I may have my old part available if you need the dimensions.
