I am sure that some of you have read how I found my Sailboat on Craig's List.

Recently I found a new way to shop for stuff (Sailboats) and other things of interest.

There is a new Search feature for Searching Craig's List Locally or at almost any distance that you are willing to drive. It will search all the surrounding cities out to a chosen mile radius.

I was just doing some searching for another boat to work on this winter and was looking in a 250 mile (53 Cities) radius and found several hundered sailboats for sale.

You might try this, it works well.

Finally. All the other saiboat lists have had the distance and area filters for years. Here's where I found my current boat 11 years ago. http://www.boattrader.com/

I just wanted to mention that not all boats get listed directly online. We found our boat from getting a heads-up on the Sandpiper forum about a small-print ad in a community weekly paper. Not everyone gets the Internet ;)

A visit to a busy marina or yacht club invariably reveals several boats for sale. We also continue to see the occasional lonely boat in a field behind a farmhouse, with a faded 'For Sale' sign on it...

I worked for a while in Tacoma for a Yacht and Ship Broker as a sales rep. The owner always told us that, if you walk through any marina, approximately 25-35% of the boats are forsale at any one time. Many do not have signs, never the less, if approached right. Many are open to selling. I found many by just walking the docks and talking to owners.

One of the problems is that if the owner is present at the boat. They almost always have a preception of value of their boat that is not realistic. The bargains that can be found are directly in proportion to the time the boat has been ignored and is showing some signs of wear.

Also in how much work you are willing or capable of doing. If you want a turn key boat. Then most likely, you will find your boat to be on the expensive side.

I posted the above link as just another way of extending your search more efficiently. I did not mean that is was an exhaustive method. Just a tool.

Neither of our Catalinas were listed. The Capri 16.5 was a donation to a charity in the same building my wife works in. We found out about the Capri 22 from another sailor who took us out for a July 4 cruise on his Olson 25.

I have found that the best way to come across a good boat is to buy a boat. Then, within just a couple weeks, you'll suddenly find all kinds of boats that look better than the one you just bought, and at a better price.

Check the U-Store-It type of places to find a boat that has not lived its life in the water.

Hunter 23 -Cave Run Lake - Kentucky
Jaxed Mash is another great site to hunt for sailboats (or other stuff), it pulls from craigslist and ebay by region or state, price filters, ect. you name it. I'm about to bring home a Hunter 23 that I found in NY a few months ago. We went to see it, made an offer on it that was refused, now I'm getting it for 20% less than my original offer since it's almost winter!!! Instead I brought home a Hunter 170 that I flipped for about twice what I paid (but did buy a new jib). The H23 just needs a good cleaning and usual minor things fixed up. This will be my 3rd Hunter Sailboat, I'll post photos soon as I get her home in Ohio.
