I have a 82 22 . Purchased last year and never a drop of water in side. This year, there is a leak from an unknown source which produces about 2 inches of water (so far) directly underneath keel cable. I can not find the source. We have not hit anything and not sure what to do. Did have keel cable replaced over the winter Could that have anything to do with it?

two places

First place to check, the bottom gudgeon! check and tighten the bolts, if you can get it on the trailer re-bed it. Second place, check the nipple that the drain hose is attached to. also the volcano tube for drips. A great way to fond leak is using a chalk line snap it around the areas you suspect and if water flows over the line you will see the streaks left behind.

Don Casey says

In Don Casey's book, he says that you can use a leaf blower to pressurize the cabin and use soap bubbles to find leaks. Sounds clever enough but I've never tried it.

Ditto the lower gudgeon

Especially if the leaks happen when you are underway vs just being at the dock. I made a rubber gasket that solved my gudgeon leak. If it is the swing keel then I can't help because mine is a fixed fin. Tougher to launch but none of those swing keel problems. ;-)

Nipple

I purchased a 1973 Last December. When we took her out for a shake-down cruise, I noticed a few drops of water coming in the boat around the nipple for the keel cable. When I tried to take the hose off the nipple, the nipple popped out of the hull. Fortunately, the boat was on the trailer. I have heard of several incidents where this nipple has broke loose. Two inches of water is a lot of water. If your gudgeon isn't loose, It probably would not let that much water come in in a single day. When I leak checked my boat, I unloaded everything including the boards that cover the bilge and completely dried the bilge. It was easy to see the water coming in around the nipple. You can lift the port lazerette and see the gudgeon bolts to see if they are leaking. Another thought! C-22 windows are frequently the cause of water below deck. On the trailer the water will collect in the compartment forward of the table, on either side. When the boat is in the water, the water will run back to the batter box area. I resealed my windows a couple years ago, and they are starting to leak a little again. I have a tarp that I put over my cabin when the boat is stored. This helps to stop rain water from coming in around the windows and crib boards. Another common place for leaks is the keel lock-bolt. This is probably not the cause of your leak, unless the bolt is missing. Once again, it is easy to see if this is the problem. David

Ooops

I said the nipple for the keel cable. Should have said the cockpit drain. Also, be sure the hose clamp on the hose for the keel volcano is tight. David

help with gudgeon

the boat is in the water and hauling is not an option at this point unless the problem gets really bad. How do I access the gudgeon and valves as referenced?

Gudgeon

The gudgeons are the brackets that the rudder slips in to. The lower gudgeon is the one that can leak when underway because underway it can go below water level. While sitting in the slip it will be a few inches above water level. You can undo the gudgeon by leaning over the transom. In my 1986 C22 the nuts are accessible from the starboard lazerette. Take the gudgeon off, craft a rubber gasket for it, poke two holes for the screws using an icepick and remount. Put a dab of caulk under each bolt as you tighten things up. That should fix any leak.
