I have an upper shroud chainplate fastened to the bulkhead that is leaking a bit and needs to be rebedded. I'm thinking about doing it myself which would involve removing the turnbuckle and shroud so I can take the bolts and deck hardare out and rebed them. Not having done this job before, I want to ask if removing the one upper shroud on the port side while the starboard side is still fully tensioned will create a problem (i.e> mast coming down) or if its OK to do this so I can remove and rebed the chainplate. Others having done this job before, what is your procedure for removing the shroud so you can remove and rebed the U-bolt and chainplate? Thanks!

U-Bolt on Upper Shroud?

I'm not sure what you mean by U-Bolt and chainplate for the *upper* shroud on a C30. AFAIK the boats used U-Bolts for the lower shrouds and chainplates bolted to the bulkheads for the upper shrouds. In any case, the answer is yes, you can remove the upper shroud chainplate and re-bed with the mast in place. Take the tension off *both* upper shrouds. Leave just a turn or two of tension on the starboard shroud. Run a halyard to the stanchion base on the port side and put some tension on it to balance the rig. Re-bed the chainplate (check the bulkhead for rot around the chainplate holes), and re-tension the rig. You can do the lowers one at a time the same way.

Thanks, Moody Buccaneer

Thanks for the good advice- hadn't thought about using the halyard to equalize the tension. And I was writing from memory on the U-bolt but you're right- the upper is on the chainplate attached to the bulkhead. I'll get to work on this project!
