Why unstep the mast to measure mast height?
No need to unstep the mast to measure mast height. Just tie a string to the halyard, pull it up the mast, then measure the length of the string that you pull back down. This reminded me of a story I heard in College. A physics professor asked his class to explain how to measure the height of a building using a barometer. Of course, he was looking for an answer related to changes in air pressure. But, one student said that all one needed to do was measure the shadow cast by the barometer and the shadow cast by the building. You know the length of the barometer, so you could easily determine the height of the building (the only missing variable in the formula).Another student suggested walking up the steps placing the barometer against the wall and measuring the number of barometer units of height then multiplying it by the length of the barometer.Yet another student suggested dropping the barometer from the roof and measuring the time it took to hit the ground then determining building height using another math formula.Of course all the answers were correct...so, the moral is, there is more than one way to determine whether a C27 is standard rig or tall rig!
