A boltroped sail can have either slugs to attach to the 'slot' or the boltrope and its sleeve fit into the 'slot'. There's more friction during raising and lowering with a boltrope IN the 'slot', but better strength and you wont develop all the 'radial wrinkles' emanating from the brass cringles where the slugs are attached to the sail when the sail fabric eventually permanently deforms and stretches at the slug attachment cringles.
A sail in which the boltrope goes IN the slot has to be rolled up when not sailing ... cant be easily flaked on the boom as you can do with a slugged sail.
