Has anyone figured out any creative ways to block out the sunlight from the smpled plexi windshield on the newer Hunters. I have seen several boats do snap-on vinyl covers on the outside of the boat. I don't like that approach as it seems that when you drill the female snaps into the gelcoat, you would be adding potential leak problems to the boat. Or, I suppose one could velcro some "blackout" window shade material to the inside of the plexi, but that doesn't seem very elegant. Does anyone have another idea??? Wynn Ferrel S/V Tranquility

Windshield cover
Wynn, on our 430, a vinyl cover for the windshield was factory-installed. We have had no problems with it, and in fact over the weekend we got caught in 42 knot gusts and it stayed in place without a problem. If the snaps are properly installed and sealed, leakage should not be a problem. Be careful with velcro - the sun beats the heck out of it, and you'll be forced to replace it often. Temporary or Permanent?
For a permanent cover, it sounds like the best fix is the vinyl cover. If you want to cover the window only when you are on board, I have a cost free suggestion. On my 340 I have a sunbrella cover for the windshield in the dodger. I have discovered that the cover is almost the perfect size and shape to cover the plexiglass windshield. Although I have yet to do it, the only thing I need to do to secure the cover in place is install snaps at the appropriate places on the deck. If you have a cover for your dodger windshield, check it out.

We thought over a similar problem on our 280 and considered privacy along with it. We bought about a yard of sunbrella material that matched the interior decor. Hemmed it and applied velcro hooks to the material and the fuzz patches to the interior liner around the forward wind shield. Works great and its been up for two years now and if we need to remove it we can.

Sun Cloth
For those of you how may not have seen this stuff. There is a product that some of the canvas companies are using for widow coverings that is sometimes referred to as sun cloth. They use it for covering the windows on dodgers. You can see through it but you cannot see in. It diffuses about 70-80% of the sunlite and keeps most of the dirt off too. It let's in plenty of light but "helps" keep the heat out. It comes in several colors. I have only seen it in blue and white. They also sell this for patio coverings (probably slightly different). Check it out.

slip neighbor did this to his Hunter with the same problem...went to Wal-Mart, and bought a roll of dark limo window tint for about 10 bucks. Maksure you get the kind that can be peeled off without any special chemicals. Spray a mist of water with a couple of drops of dishwashing soap onto the inside of the window, unroll the tint material and press it on. Squeegee the water mix out with the edge of a credit card, then trim excess with a razor knife. let dry for 24 hours. To remove, just wet it down and peel off. Won't hurt the window, very easy to apply and does not change the looks for outside.
