I notice that you mention that your new sail slides will be significantly longer. If you haven't already done so, one item to consider is that when all the longer slides are stacked up when the sail is down, the sum total extra length might leave the top of the resting sail higher than the top of your sail cover. I don't know how your Catalina is set up, but one possible solution if you have the type of slug entry gate that is below the normal stopping point (i.e. the sail slides currently do not drop all the way down to the boom), you can modify so that they do. This can help you recover the extra height so the sail cover will still fit.

I think you need to call the sail manufacturer on that one. Maybe your sail had a jack line in the luff area. It was common in the 70's and 80's. Each grommet had a small loop and the rope would go through the first one then a slide then the second and on down. But the jack line did not go the full length. It was another way to tighten the luff before the use of a cunningham.
