We have a good working cold plate refrigerator. I have seen some refrigerators that have a metal section close to the cold plate that is the freezer section? Can this freezer section be added to a refrigerator. Is it just a metal sections that gets really cold since it is close to the cold plate or does it have a special core, etc to make it colder?

No it would not work. The design goal in a cold plate refrigerator is to maintain the inside of the box at a temperature of 34F to 39F in a most efficient manner. A freezer needs to operate at 5F to 20F. While a cold plate evaporator will charge to around 25F it is not designed to maintain that temperature as opposed to a constant cycle refrigerator that will cycle 4 to 5 times in one hour to maintain temperature. What you can do is set frozen foods near the plate so that they will stay frozen longer. The advantage of the cold plate refrigerator is that it uses about 1/2 the power of a constant cycle one. They do make cold plate refrigerator/freezers but requires partitions and two separately controlled plates. A while ago was reading a posting from a sailor that indicated his cold plate refrigerator had a freezer partition and that it was a waste as the refrigerator part was not large enough for his needs while the freezer was mostly empty.
