Having sailed by this island many times I am at a loss to understand how this boat got there. If anyone knows the back story please do tell..

This is the ram island with the lighthouse on it across the channel from Portland HL.

never fall asleep on a lee shore unless you are 40 miles or more off.......that looks even moe treacherous than kali-mexico's lee shore with our rocky stuff.... there are magnets in those rocks that attract boats....

I had a soft grounding a couple years ago and us tow boat charged me $900.00 to get me off, it took about one and a half min., the paper work took longer than the actual tow. I can't imagine what that must cost.
we got stuck on a spoils bank in bay near port st joe--- the sea toad folks said 285 per hour--was less than 30 seconds to pull off the bank-- but was "salvage job"- so the boat driver was allowed to charge anywhere from 10dollars to 250 dollars per foot of boat length--we were 37 ft-- we were hit for 1695.00-- wow--- so watch your groundings and be aware of your spending limits and sail accordingly.

Good job on Tow Boat. If it had been left there it probably would have ended up in small enough pieces to drop in a dumpster.
Maine, Randy and I were wondering how we did NOT hear about that?? Word travels so quick in these circles and the first we saw of this was an internet posting by someone from away.

friends broke loose in a storm in 41 kts winds in sd and were to be charged 9000usd to be saved they kedged by selves and save boat for less.
I spoke to a CG friend last night and he said it was an older gentleman at the wheel who was just not paying close enough attention to the lee shore. There was also an incoming tide which exasperated the situation. Unfortunately, it happened at an astronomical high so she was way up there.
Might be time for this gent to retire from sailing. He was very lucky this time.

Retirement might be an option, or staying awake...
I find it tough to swallow or consider that hitting a LARGE island with a TALL lighthouse "not paying close enough" attention..... Close enough is the part I have trouble with.. Seems more like unadulterated NO attention... I suppose hitting an island is better than hitting another boat though???
I don't go too hard on these sailors that end up on the rocks or beach(I'm one of themRetirement might be an option, or staying awake...
). As I see damaged boats hauled in our area regularly, it seems as many hit the most obvious hazzards in broad daylight. Occasionally well marked hazzards inside our harbors here catch an experienced captain, even professionals. Sometimes I think there's a close to home complacency that gets a few boats in trouble every year around here.
I am kinda in the "...there but for the grace of God go I." camp on things like that.. So far (fingers crossed) I've not stuck one quite that bad, but ya never know what nature and her ugly sister Corrosion will throw at you.. This one sounds like asleep at the wheel, but the guy may have been having a blank spot..??
